Here you go - thanks in advance.

Thanks Peter. As time allows I will play with that tonight or sometime within the next couple of days.

Yeah, that may be partly the guitar, but also as Rick Ruskin points out, Tony's track does have a ton of reverb on it. The reverb is probably what hits you first on that track.

here's a tutorial on izotope's EQ matching (not guitar, unfortunately):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuLpXexvt10

In practice, I don't really use this much, but it's a useful tool for verifying differences in EQ curves, and seeing if what you hear lines up with an analysis. It won't help much with things like lots of reverb vs little, but it can give you info about the overall EQ characteristics.

I have got Reverb on mine, but was mindful of overdoing it!

I made a very quick mix for you, not trying to match Tony's, just trying to make it sound good (to me), but with more reverb than I'd normally used. PM'd you with the file. I'm sure Rick will be able to do better with more time.

One thing I notice when listening closer is that compared to Tony's, you're tending to cut off some notes. Maybe it's the tune, or your style and it doesn't sound bad, but if the sustain and ringing of Tony's track is what appeals, that may be part of it. I almost always find when I set out to try to sound like someone else's track, that it comes down to how I'm playing far more than anything about the recording technique. Matching someone else's "touch" is harder than matching mic placement or reverb settings...

Thanks - I like it very much.

In terms of playing, the shortened notes are where I am not playing cleanly enough - I have not got this piece properly under my fingers yet but wanted to start to play with the tone I wanted when recording.

I like the ringing tones, so need to be more precise in my playing to flow and also to allow the open ringing...

It’s quite a tough piece I found in this regard.

I find the eq matching interesting, but finding a vst that works for Audacity is tough.

Thanks very much Derek, it sounds good to my ears.

Could you please give me some insight into what it is that you did to it?

Tried to more or less get a noticeable reverb (ala Tony's recording). Sounds better somewhat drier though IMO.

Volume balanced R and L (just a couple of decibels).
High pass filter centered around about forty hertz.
A little boost on frequencies above about five kilohertz
(which I don't normally do but you mentioned something
about high end clarity - not sure it helped)
Reverb via Seventh Heaven (again more than I would use in my music).

I assume (I know the old saying about assume making an *** of u and me) he means a Neumann KM 184. It looks like the same mic from the source of this quote as the one in the Tony McManus Sleeping Tune video. Here's a link to the quote.

Hope this info adds to the conversation.

Thanks Trevor, that’s good to know..

You're welcome, Peter. I'd like to take a bit of liberty here and say that your Avalon guitar sounds like a fine instrument to me. I'm convinced it will get you where you want to go recording wise.
Thanks for sharing your efforts.

Thanks Trevor, it is a lovely guitar and I’m lucky to have it.
