Pulling the Elixirs off the GS Mini Mahogany
Hey, all -
I got my GS Mini Mahogany nearly a year ago, and I love it. it has flown to Greece with me and been played in some cool places. Great little guitar. I restrung it a month ago with it's standard Elixir Nanoweb PB strings. It has sounded terrible to me ever since - harsh, 'zingy', brash... ripped them off and put on a set of Martin Retro Monel strings and it sounds so much nicer to my ears. Warmer and simpler. The overtones with the Elixirs were dominating the sound this set - I don't know why. Maybe my ears are used to my Martin 000-15m with Monels, and have learned to like that more fundamental sound. Whatever the reason, Elixirs will be off this guitar and Monels will be staying! Obligatory pic:

I believe gsmini's come with elixir 80/20s, not pb's. Maybe its different for the mahogany versions though? Maybe that is your issue.

Although I have a spruce/walnut GSM I agree with you about the Elixirs sound too bright and brash for me on mine. I have not tried the Monels, but funny enough was thinking about that yesterday, seriously. I have had good results with DR Rares PB mediums and John Pearce PB mediums.
I like the nice straight grain of the mahogany on your GS mini. I happen to own a Martin 000-15 as well, probably my favorite guitar. But with PB strings as I like the overtones on that one. |

I have a hog GS Mini that needs a string change and even though I have the said Elixirs waiting in the drawer I'd be happy to try something else.
What gauge of Martin Retro Monels did you use please? Many thanks, David |

I have a mahogany Mini as well. Agree that Elixers didn't work. Haven't tried Monels on the Mini but I love them on my 15 series Martins. Best string I've found for my Mini is the Gibson Masterbuilt 80/20 in .13 gauge. They need a few days to settle down and then the tone is great and lasts for me. Give 'em a try!

I am sure that audiences have no idea what kind of guitar much less what kind of strings we are using. That said, I'd like to hire a kid someday to change the strings every day on my OM 35, twenty different brands and gauges, to see what makes it sound best.
