I took Skype lessons from Mark Hanson for 1.5 years. Started with Mark when I was about 60 years old.
I couldn't imagine learning fingerstyle without formal lessons. Mark helped to set the stage for me and I enjoy going it alone now.

I’d be dubious of getting a solid foundation in fingerstyle technique from YT videos. I think some can be quite good but are limited in scope. The courses and books mentioned before are structured and work you in a progressive manner towards a solid foundation (plus many are time proven as Hanson’s Contemporary Travis Picking book just celebrated its 30th anniversary printing). Accent on Music, TrueFire, Homespun, and Peghead Nation are good sources for solid and well-crafted fingerstyle courses both on and off line.
