Default My First Custom Guitar: Simon Fay OM # 12

Last year, Simon Fay built me my first custom guitar, and shipped it in April. It turned out more beautiful than I could imagine and has ethereal tone. For the top Simon chose for me a remarkable Sinker Redwood set. The back and sides are highly figured Claro Walnut, and the binding is Snakewood with alternating lines of Bocote and Snakewood in the purfling.

Other appointments are a Ziricote rosette, an African Blackwood saddle and gold Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons.

Simon has refined his OM with a slightly different body shape, and I'll very likely be ordering another Fay guitar in the future.

Beautiful guitar with an unusual sound port position. Any info on what drives Simon's decision for this higher than usual decision?

I'm not Simon, but I have/had a dummy guitar with multiple ports and decided to use a port location just like Simon's based on "blind" tests, seemed to work well for me, bet it does on Simon's as well.

Default Sound port position

Simon gave me a choice of positions for the soundport. With the double sides on his guitars, he's able to put a port almost anywhere. I chose a higher position because of the angle at which I hold the guitar when I play. It works great for me.

I suppose you could spend more money for a custom guitar than choosing Simon Fay (or you could spend less I suppose) but I'd have a hard time believing you'd ever get a better quality instrument. Man, he does nice work.

I'll have to "Amen!" that! I'm looking forward to the day when I can order another Fay. Right now I'm waiting for a Ryan Paradiso that'll be ready sometime this Spring.

Congrats, Greg! I love the look of Simons guitars. I've never played one but I really like the look and vibe he's achieved. Have you listened to Jim Toziers record - "Guitar Pieces" ? The Fay on that album sounds great...

Hope you enjoy it for years to come.

Kindly,
Danny
