Default keeping the beat with the right hand ( strumming hand)

So when i'm alternate flatpicking I pick 8th notes du and quarter notes d/silent up to keep the same rhythm/beat speed with my right hand. Now i'm wondering if i should also pick half notes the same way d/silent udu so my right hand is constantly working at the same speed. i'm having trouble getting it but when i do it seems smoother and more rhythmic.

In the short term you may find some progress, but long term I would recommend that you NOT tie your right hand so mechanically to the beat.

It will make it impossible to do things like swing rhythm or triplets.
