WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
DO YOU LIKE ONLINE LESSONS OR DO YOU PREFER LESSONS IN PERSON?

I prefer in-person lessons. If you need something more affordable, online lessons can be valuable but I like in-person lessons because they keep me focused and a bit more disciplined about my practice and I progress with improving my playing more quickly. I have also found that depending on the teacher that I get more personalized feedback when it comes to techniques. I can make a more immediate correction before something gets too embedded in my muscle memory.
Also, you can't beat having another set of eyes and ears across from you. Teachers can see and hear things about your playing that can lead to small adjustments that make a world of difference. Best, Jayne Last edited by jaymarsch; 01-07-2020 at 09:55 AM. Reason: Added content |

I've done both. I just stopped lessons with a teacher in favor of online lessons again.
They both have pros and cons. A teacher can be better but that depends so much on his/her abilities to teach and to meet you where you are. I find that the flexibility and variety of the various online options suits me better. Currently I'm learning 3 different pieces with 3 different online methods simultaneously. I'm going at my own pace and am not stressing about disappointing any teacher. Online is less expensive and I don't have to commute anywhere for lessons. But you should have a decent amount of motivation and abilities to keep going by yourself because there's no teacher there to give you any motivation or assurance. Also you need to really be able to sit back and hear yourself or maybe record yourself and playback. These are just some of my thoughts on the issue. Ymmv. Best, Floyd

Online or video for me. If I was more advanced I'd probably look for more individual instruction in person.

I do both. I’m still a novice fingerpicker and not getting any younger, so I need all the help I can get and fast

Hi KDp
I prefer workshops (which I record whenever I take one). I like the personal aspect of being able to see and try up front, and have a reference to go back to when processing things later (once I knew/understood notes, chords, scales, the neck etc…audio recordings have been as good as video ones). My favorite question to ask players is about something they played during a performance or gig I was at, and I ask them if they will show it to me again and ask if I can video it on my phone while they demonstrate it (have not been declined yet). Free lessons!!! I find video useful as a follow-up to what I've seen, and have also learned tons from pre-recorded DVDs as well. I'd prefer to have a magic fairy tap me with her wand and bestow the talents of Al Petteway upon me…but I appreciate more the workshops of his I've attended and DVDs of his I've digested and dissected. |

Well, not such much an online "lesson," but I just want to watch how they play it! Like watching Jorma play Embryonic Journey. Of course, I had to practice it for about 6 months, but I ended up with a passable version, I think.

Quick and easy, more of a "research" thing... online.
ANYTHING halfway serious? In person...
