"Patterns" are for posers.

Its like using a script to read from for conversations on a date

To play devil's advocate, we do have conversation scripts we use on dates and in all sorts of other social occasions. It's just we have memorised and internalised these to such a degree that we no longer consciously recognise them. I would argue that finger picking patterns are the same. They're part of the language of music and most useful when they are internalised and used subconsciously. However, you still need to learn them somehow.

Patterns are great to learn. One of the best tools for acquiring the dexterity to play finger style.

But once you "learn" them, you should un-learn them.
