I started like many others, trying to learn other people's licks. Eventually I figured out that I needed to connect those licks - there would have to be my own "connective tissue." Eventually I figured out that what I was doing to composing on the spot, and that was a gateway. I figured out that there needed to be melody and form. I've written up an article about the art of soloing and it is HERE on my little website. I hope it helps!
