Mis-Heard Lyrics
Ever get a little chuckle when you finally realize the vocalist is singing something different than what you thought you heard?
It's especially funny when someone else teases you for mangling words you've always had wrong, maybe for decades. It happens to all of us, especially some egocentric guitar players who regard the singer as an "extra" instrument in the band, like a triangle or tambourine. A classic, especially to the ears of some shocked parents in 1970, was Jimi singing "'Scuse me while I kiss this guy." Five years before that, I thought George Jones (the original) was singing "And the race is on, up the backstretch, hard eggs are comin' to the inside." Who knew? I was 10. Share some of yours (no need to dig 'em up from the internet). Let's hear the real ones. |

There's the obvious "revved up like a deuce."
Until college, I pronounced the word "album" as "alblum". I don't know where that extra "L" came from...

Dan’s Dairy Queen near my high school in Waco, Texas, had a jukebox with tubby bass, and for over a year in the mid-1960s, I thought Creedence Clearwater was singing: “...there’s a bathroom on the right” (instead of “bad moon on the rise”).
I later learned that others heard the same thing. Dirk

My oldest boy at age seven always sang "only women make good lovers".

When my kids were little, I told them that “I Kissed a Girl” was “I Kissed a Squirrel”. It made for an easier conversation...not that there is anything wrong with that.

...when Rickie Lee Jones hit the airwaves in 1979 I thought she was singing Junkies in Love...

"Just like the Lone Ranger, sings a song sounds like he's singing Ooh Ooh Ooh"
The worst part is when I realized it was a dove, I first thought it was a "one winged dove". At least that made sense. I figured a one winged dove would be sad. Never been about lyrics. I don't think I can sing all the words in many of my favorite songs.

My favorite is, "the girl with colitis goes by" instead of "the girl with kaleidoscope eyes". From the song Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.
I started noticing these things when it became necessary to learn lyrics to when perform. There are often surprises in what you end up singing versus what you've always heard. |

Mis-Heard Lyrics
My favorite misheard lyric of all time has (and always will be): “Kiss this Guy” by Jimmi Hendrix!
