Email from Amazon telling me my account was frozen.
Just hover your mouse over "Amazon" and you will see who really sent it.
Never open, just delete.

Got a call from CITIBANK telling me my card was hacked and the thieves bought three thousand plus dollars of items from Amazon and sent five thousand dollars to Poland and the money was picked up at the US Embassy by my “son”.
All they needed from me was my SS# and CC# and they would fix everything. Isn’t that nice of them?

I get many phone calls, mostly from overseas numbers but sometimes locally or other states (Im in Australia) - a voice message saying there is an issue with cutsoms, or a police matter, or a tax matter, and so on, press 1 to talk to someone.
If I'm not busy I'll press 1 to talk. First one I asked if this scam actually ever worked. One asked me if I had any questions, I said no, I was just wanting to waste his time. The calls never last long - I dont think I've ever got more than a minute in before they hang up.
A drop in the ocean I know but I enjoy wasting thier time.

Just to throw a monkey wrench in the whole deal, about 5 years ago my mother-in-law (who was in her 80s at the time) got a letter from a law firm saying that she was an heir to part of an inheritance. First thing we thought was scam of course. However it turned out to be legitimate. This law firm specialized in finding heirs for estates where the heirs named in the wills had died before the person who had originally made the will. They actually traced people through genealogical records to find obscure relatives and my mother-in-law was one. It wasn't a fortune but it did come to a couple of thousand dollars once it was split among the group of heirs that they found. I think the law firm took 50% of the inheritance up front. However I would agree that most of these notices you get are scams.

I had the perfect email storm hit earlier this year. Email number one informed me that porn site I was watching was able to video my "activities" while I was on the site, noting that I had some particularly aberrant tendencies. If i didn't deposit a considerable sum of money in an account they listed, they threatened send the video to everyone in my email contact list. About two emails down in my inbox was the saver. I was rich beyond belief, some Nigerian prince who I had never met had chosen me out of everyone in the world to receive his fortune, nothing to worry about!!!

I've received two recent emails from McAfee telling me I only have 2 days to respond or my McAfee account will be deleted. The first 2 day warning came about 8 days ago, while the second one came today.

I don't have a McAfee account ...

Just this morning my wife got a text from "Netflix" saying our account had issues and she needed to click the link to "talk to customer support"

Ain't the computer age just grand??

best,
PJ

I got one of those this morning!

My ancient mother in law (from Nuremburg, but a US citizen since mid-60s) had her 60 year-old son over to trouble-shoot the TV cable box when her phone rang:

MIL: "Hello?"

Scammer: "Hi mom."

MIL: "Wie Gehts, who is dis?"

Scammer: "It's your son."

MIL: "Oh, dis is funny, because my son is here mit me now, YOU SON OF A B__!" SLAM!!!

That’s one I have not seen or heard of as as being as ubiquitous as some of the others. Unfortunately I can see older folks with some diminished mental capacity falling for it.

A few years back my in-laws got the "grandpa, I got beat up and I'm in jail" call. My father-in-law was trying to figure out how they wanted him to send the money when my mother-in-law called us up to tell us about it. They were so convincing that we had to get my son to call them before they would believe it wasn't him.

I get 3 or 4 emails a day stating that my resume has been vetted and some entity wished to hire me.

But my resume ain’t online.

And if it were, it would hardly make anyone want to hire me. My boss still can’t figure out what I do. For a couple of years, he thought I was on the grounds crew.

My pard got dogged into a FB scam, tonight. A message said they'd sent $1200 from my pard's account to someone she actually knows... At the same time, they sent a message to that person, saying my pard had made a mistake, so could that person send a refund to WIMC, although into another account... There was no money sent to the person who was asked for a refund... Neither of their bank accounts were actually hacked... The scammers were just hoping for the honesty of a genuine friend... It had my pard, and her friend, on the phone for an hour, trying to figure out what the heck was really going on.....
