You couldn't enter those beautiful waters because it was infested with stonefish. Step on one of those and you're done.

I spent the fourth of July 1988 on that atoll on my way to the USS Forrestal which was operating outside the Straits of Hormuz during Operation Earnest Will. We got the day off and actually did snorkel in the shallows. We were 18 year old kids though so what did we know? It was one of the best days of my life because it was a holiday, otherwise we probably would have been swinging machetes in the jungle.

When I served as a USN flt. surgeon in the 80’s and 90’s, DG is where you were stationed if you embarrassed the Navy. The posting was considered a hardship and only required 2 yrs of service as opposed to the usual 3 yrs. Also, an ‘unaccompanied’ tour. Truly the ‘middle of nowhere’ in the middle of the IO. Great pic., beautiful place from this distance.

Really nice, very well done, love the effect of the snow below the light and the tasteful sparkle at the bottom

I imagine that in the Internet age it's actually not so bad now. I recall the late 80s/early 90s when there was no commercial Internet yet and "snail mail" via UNREP or COD arrival on deck were our only contact with home.

After nearly a foot of snow overnight here in Minnesota, my thoughts turned back to summer. Devil Track Lake, Grand Marais at its quiet best.

That is a terrific shot. If it’s not on your wall, it should be.

iPhone 11’s “autofocus” of a perfectly clear half moon in the hole in the clouds results in a de-focused image that reminds me of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings.

I have no idea how or why the image got rotated when posting it.
