Still on Tony Sly, this one is pretty amazing too. Describing a visit with a loved one on their death bed, alot of the lyrics sound like they would have been Tony's last words at the time. After his death they sort of took on new significance. Worth noting is that Chris Shiflett, who went on to join the Foo Fighters, was Tony's lead guitarist at this point.

This is another time and place type thing. This album came out just after I graduated, me and the bass player for a band I was in were cruising around our crappy little town, slowly figuring out we had outgrown hanging out at the skate park and Red Rooster all summer. The first time we popped this CD into the deck of his POS Civic and this song came on it just blew our minds, we just kept playing it over and over for about a week. Every time I hear it I still feel like gassing up the car and just aimlessly driving west with the vague idea of never going home.

So many great choices here. I haven't read each entry so maybe this is a repeat but I've always loved John Hiatt's Icy Blue Heart.

San Francisco Mabel Joy by Mickey Newbury
His daddy was an honest man, just a red dirt Georgia farmer His momma lived her short life having kids and baling hay He had fifteen years and an ache inside to wander So he hopped a freight at Waycross and wound up in L.A. Well the cold nights had no pity on that Waycross Georgia farm boy Most days he went hungry, then the summer came He met a girl known on the strip, as San Francisco's Mabel Joy Destitution's child born on an L.A. street called Shame Growing up came quietly in the arms of Mabel Joy Laughter found their mornings brought new meaning to their life The night before she left sleep came and found that Waycross country boy With dreams of Georgia cotton and a California wife Sunday morning found him standin 'neath the red light at her door A right cross sent him reeling, put him face down on the floor In place of his Mabel Joy he found a merchant mad marine Who growled, "Your Georgia neck is red but Sonny, you're still green" He turned twenty-one in a gray rock federal prison A judge had no mercy for that Waycross Georgia boy Staring at those four gray walls in silence, Lord he just listened To that midnight freight he knew could take him back to Mabel Joy Sunday morning found him 'neath the red light at her door With a bullet in his side, he cried "Have you seen Mabel Joy?" Stunned and shaken someone said "Son, she don't live here no more She left this house four years today, they say she's looking for some Georgia farm boy" |

The whole dang song is amazing but…

Emmylou Harris’ “Red Dirt Girl” is the saddest song I know, by a long shot.
