Happy "birthday" and nice story. Congrats on being smart enough to keep that first Martin! Beautiful photo, (I'd keep a copy in the Martin case).

You have a great jem of a guitar there. That series of D16's are special. They were initially a NAMM special run from Martin. One of the first Martin's to get back close to pre-war specs. Forward shifted scalloped bracing with small bridge plates etc. Extremely lightly built compared to Martin's from the 1970's and 80's. I have a 1990 D16M that gets better and better through the years. If you can find one with a decent neck angle and enough saddle showing they are guitars that should be snapped up IMO. Often referred to as a poor man's D18V.

Here's mine on the left next to my 2013 D18.

Some were satin and some like mine were gloss finish. Check out the silking in the spruce.

Default D16H

I can appreciate your original post as I own two D16H. A 1991 and a 1993...They are absolutely killer guitars with that old dry, woody, loud, resonant, open sound like a 40's D18. I also own a 2005 D18V but it's sound/tone is more contemporary sounding compared to the old dry vintage tone from the D16H. There is also quite a difference in build weight. The D18V weighs 4 lb 4 oz while the 91' D16H weighs 3 lb 14 oz and the 93' D16H weighs 3 lb 12 oz.
