Man, I studied this song hard back in the day.

My favorite version was the 13+ minute stunner released on Hendrix In The West (San Diego Sports Arena, 5/24/1969). He takes you there AND back.

Hendrix was the one guitarist that inspired me to realize that the pursuit of guitar and music could be more than a hobby - a holy lifelong journey.

Red House was an early favorite of mine, but the album with the most amazing playing is BOG. Only a few players ever could reach the level of painting the sonic imagery of battle and death like Jimi did on Machine Gun. Using a Strat/Marshall and just fuzz, vibe, and wah pedals Hendrix created the fury and chaos of battle. The eerie sounds of death hanging on the battlefield as the sound of sporadic automatic weapon fire fades is an amazing display of controlling your instrument to a level only he and Jeff Beck have ever attained.

I'm of the opinion that nay-saying music "connoisseurs" who dismissed Jimi's Are You Experienced and Axis Bold as Love albums as "psychedelic wailing" might've been obliged to acknowledge the legit blues riffage in Red House. Perhaps even going so far as to admit that he was a hell of a lot more than a paisley-print-ruffly-blouse wearing druggie acid rocker.

Yes, his interviews are rock-solid. He did several with Eddie Van Halen that were amazing.

Agreed. I played this album probably daily for several years. A few months ago I listened to Red House and found it as compelling as it did 50 years ago. Definitely one of his top live performances.
