Default Did you plan and practice the first song you play on that new custom commission?

I've got a Kostal OMC in build right now so the anticipation and excitement is high. I'm also thinking ahead to what will be the first songs I play on it. I've got two candidates right now:

Doug Young's DADGAD solo fingerstyle arrangement of Paul McCartney's For No One. I took a Zoom class with Doug two months ago and this song was the centerpiece and I just connected with it.

Mark Hanson's DGDGBD solo fingerstyle arrangement of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now. I've been wanting to take on a Joni Mitchell song and what better one.

I have both paperless now (i.e. memorized) so just polishing em up for the big day.

Did you have similar aspirations with the arrival of your new custom?

Smile First song...

As always, my first song on my next John Kinnaird build will be that old Chinese hit: Tu-Ning. Hahahaha

Interesting question, though. It has been well over 20 years since I bothered making a set list for gigs. I never followed them much anyway even when I did make them way back when...

What beverage to imbibe for the initial playing, now there is a question!

Have fun and enjoy the whole process!

Paul

No... I'm not planning and practicing specific tunes for when I get my Franklin OM. But yes... there are certain pieces I'm going to use to evaluate it because there's certain tones I've always connected with Nick's guitars and I want to see how mine compares...

But, I love, John Renbourn: "Pavane d'Aragon", "Little Niles" and "The Southwind" for starters as tester pieces. Also Pierre Bensusan's "4 AM" and Clive Carroll's "Black Moon".

My other guitar I'm having made from a local luthier will be set up with heavier strings so I can play more of Michael Hedges stuff...all fingerstyle.

Most of the time I just apologize to my new guitars for the mediocrity to which they are about to be exposed. After receiving their forgiveness, I just play the same old garbage.

When I finally received my Buendia jumbo a few years ago, it seemed fitting to embark upon our relationship with Masaaki Kishibe's majestic "Hajimari (The Beginning)".

I love the response.

But believe me, this procedure does not even require a custom instrument

I need to check that one out, I learned Rainy Window, Shooting Star, and Hana a couple of years ago and I recently pulled Shooting Star back out again. All lovely songs to play.

Jim, I was at the SG in 2019 and we met. Hoping to see you next year!

I was thinking the same thing just recently with a new guitar coming in early 2021.

I have been working on Waiting by Calum Graham which would be a fun first piece to play.

Vetiver by Michael Watts or the Luca Freddi version on The Sound of Silence. Both have a lot of space around the notes, would also be cool.

Hmmmm....better get practicing..

I have never worked on a song specifically, but I did ask Ben Wilborn to send me my last build already tuned in Drop D (there is really no strong data that detuning the guitar makes a difference when shipping, so before anyone gets all worked up, I took the "risk), so that instead of playing Paul's song, the first sounds I heard out of it was the big full D chord.

Since Jayson Bowerman has re-dubbed his OMs as the "Oregon Manzanita" model, I have been working on Tony Rice's "Manzanita" with the intention that that will be the first thing I play on my OM when it is ready.
