Hate talking on the phone or hate losing your life to internet based fraud? Hmm....tough choice there.

Except I don't think it's an either / or proposition. I wish you well with whatever technologies you use to communicate.

Because no one was ever defrauded on the phone.

IMHO a large part of the problem is that we have virtually no oversight/regulation of the multitude of social media. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter are all out there winging it. The powers that be understand the medium and the actors little, if at all.

The bad actors that have learned to swim in the virtual ocean have no one to stop them preying on the great unwashed masses (that's us! ).

I never go through a warning email sight click. If I think it may be legit I will got to the sight on my own and look into it. In the case of Facebook I would of gone to Facebook as I would normally and changed things. I don't ever open anything through an email unless I'm positive it's legit.

I've changed to using my face via the phone for MFA (two factor authentication) where I supposed there could be a joke there. When first read fingerprint ts I was working on something bare handed in freezing weather. I friend grabbed my finger to see if he could get into my phone if I was dead. So far faking that with the new phone doesn't work.

I do hope people realize the faking and manipulation that goes on.

Getting people to change is hard. I'm on a project to very much tighten good security because our industry segment is a target. It's not easy more because of human behavior than anything. The bad people are turning to small business and the less educated because they're easy targets.

But if you are a gigging musician, it definitely helps to belong to Facebook. I used to spend all day going around town putting up posters before many gigs. These days one post on Facebook almost guarantees a full house. When I ask folks how they heard about a gig, most say they heard it on Facebook. Many say someone who read about it on Facebook told them. We still do some postering, but not nearly as much.

I have reconnected with some old high school buddies as well and I kinda like that. Granted, there is a lot of bull, but it's very easy to scroll past it.

The best is closing the account completely.
Yep; this is what I did.

I got tired of the trolls, rhetoric, and purposely divisive posts. I truly miss the contacts with lifelong friends, some of whom have left no other path of contact. But Facebook got out of hand in my case.

I've never had a Facebook account. Looked creepy from the beginning to me.

I always hear people say it's how they keep in touch with friends.

I still have all of my friends, many for 50 years. Have never lost touch, I simply don't have to look at pictures of their food......

Difference is that I have a choice of who I deal with on the phone. This is the company/companies themselves gathering your info which is being released willingly by its customers.

When I receive an e-mail purportedly from a website I frequent asking me to clink on a link within the e-mail I do one of two things:

1) I delete the e-mail (and forward a copy of it to spoof@claimedwebsite.xxx); or

2) Go to the website like I always do to see if the message content is there. Occasionally it is, often it is not.

I did have a My Space but quickly caught on to how they were making money. When Facebook first came out people were going nuts but the first question I asked when membership was free was, "how do they make money then"? I never opened an account and never will.

I recently watched this video by one of my favorite youtube artists and I could never be a fan of that company. There is so much wrong with them..... I'd better stop since I like being a member here.

Really? Innumerable tales of people getting conned out of money and identity via the phone. Many people are as comfortable controlling security online as you may be controlling it on the phone.

Yes really. You can't fix stupid nor gullible. On the phone there's lots more clues that something is likely a scam well before they ever get your info as you have more control over what you reveal.

I'm sure many people are "comfortable" with online security. That doesn't make it a reality though.
