Default GR Bear Super Parlor

I've decided to post some pics of an ongoing build by Rye Bear. I had been looking at various guitar sites like we all do when we dream, and I came upon a SP - super parlor by Rye on Carter Vintage Guitars (or TNAG back then). I've always been a African Blackwood fan, and more recently I am a total addict for maple. This was a hybrid. After some not so good news personally, I drove up to Rye's house about 30 minutes away last year for a visit to uplift my spirits! After spending some time discussing builds my GAS kicked in and I decided to have him build me a SP. Marcus Wong's posts about Rye's guitars also influenced me. I've migrated to smaller bodied guitars and sold off almost all of my larger guitars because I've become a big fan of Dominic Miller and his K Yairi CYTM classical guitar and thought Rye's SP would be a great acoustic twin for the CYTM. As well, it would complement my other two acoustics - a 00 by Steve Kinnaird and a Pina by Mark Hatcher, both of which are fantastic! So, here we go!

So, to start off, we have a Engelmann Spruce top that is being prepared:

Congrats on the new build!

I'm interested in the ABW/maple hybrid idea. What does that mean exactly?

Basically, back is going to be Bird’s Eye Maple and sides are African Blackwood. So, when you’re playing you think you’ve got an African Blackwood guitar, but the sound is Maple!! (And Engelmann Spruce of course!)
Here’s two pics of the previous one….

Now you might ask: Why didn’t you just buy the other one?? Well, I’m a slotted headstock guy, but primarily I’ve really settled on a 1 & 7/8 inch nut width…

Thanks for sharing here…. We have seen very few Trevor Gore influenced (Falcate Bracing) guitars shared here in the AGF Custom Shop.

I'm assuming those braces are capped with carbon fiber. Is that right? And if so, what kind of carbon fiber is it that can follow the bends in those braces?

Most interesting build.

From Rye’s website: ‘falcate bracing - incorporating laminated curved braces reinforced with carbon fiber above and below the brace…’
I’ll get some further details from Rye!

John, the complete construction procedure is shown in:

“Contemporary Acoustic Guitar Design And Build” by Trevor Gore and Gerard Gilet, Volume 2, Build, 2011, ISBN: 978-0-9871174-1-0.

Rye says it’s a 6k carbon tow (string) using west system epoxy resin as the glue. He uses a combination of 6k and 3k carbon tow on the tops of my instruments depending on the the model. You can buy the carbon in a roll of tow like this or you can just take apart woven cloth of your desired weight.

Smile Cool build!

I was interested in the CF bracing too. And then I find John K asking about it! Haha

John has built quite a few great instruments with laminate bracing, but to my knowledge, no CF lams yet…

This will be a super cool axe, I wager!

Thanks for sharing the build with us all!

Paul
