I don't think you need "to care". It's a philosophical discussion of a human created schema. I suppose it matters to some people somehow but basically this is just a discussion of the differences (perceived and/or real) between people born in different times.

They should have started with 'Generation A' and then worked through the alphabet.

Only problem would have been when they reached 'H'. 'Generation H' sounds a bit too much like 'Preparation H'!
