I think that the Martin original 00 (12 fret of course) and the Gibson (12 fret L1 and L2 style guitars are te most beautifully proportioned flat tops ever.

I have a number, with the Waterloo WL12 serving my need for a 12 fret Gibson style.

I also have a hand made 00-28 made here in the UK and ordered in '98 by my wife for me.
My most recent 00 s my Eastman E40-00 which is a beaut.

If I could I would have a Collings 002h or a 003. or possibly a Santa Cruz 00-Skye ! (whoever he is ...joke)

Others have mentioned Slobod for 00, and I have to agree, based on the ones I've played.

Food for thought: In the vintage world, you can get a fully original, no issues 1930s 00 for the cost of many of the luthiers mentioned (see my sig). I wouldn't say that if you were shopping for a 000 or D.

The best sounding 00 I’ve ever played was built by Jeff Traugott, it had huge unreal bass for such a small instrument! It was quite remarkable!

Default 00?

One thing to note, is just because a makers calls a model a “00” or compares it to the Nazareth namesake doesn’t mean it is the same size. Some differ quite a bit in their body volumes due to being wider (up to 14-3/4”) or narrower (down to 14”) or in some case much deeper (i.e., 4-5/8”) for example.

Maker———- Lower Bout—-Heel Depth——End Depth———Body Length
CF Martin———14-1/8”———-3-1/4”—————4-1/8”———-—-19-3/8”
Bashkin————14-1/4”———-3-1/2”—————4-1/8”—————19-5/8”
Blanchard——-—-14”—————3-5/8”—————4-1/4”———-—19-1/8”
Claxton————14-3/4”———-3-3/8”—————4-3/8”———-—-19-3/4”
Collings————14-1/4”————3-1/4”—————4-1/8”————-19-3/8”
Froggy Bottom-14-1/4”———-3-3/8”—————4-1/4”———-—-19-3/8”
Kraut—————-14-3/8”———-3-1/2”—————4-1/2”—————19-1/2”
Kostal—————14-5/8”———-3-1/2”—————4-3/8”—————19-1/8”
Santa Cruz——-14-1/2”———-3-3/8”———-—-4-1/8”—————-19-1/2”
Traugott——-—-14-5/8”———-3-3/8”————--4-5/8”—————-18-3/4”

I don't want to be the pedant, but somebody's gotta assume the role.

The Gibson L, despite the L-00 moniker, is not 00-sized. It sits between the 00 and 000 (roughly, 00 sized upper bout and 000 sized lower bout).

There are lots of great 00 builders. I’m fortunate to have a few great examples a Bashkin 00-12 which I’ve had 12 years and an excellent Santa Cruz 00-12 Skye.
