I am terrible at woodworking but I always like watching someone who knows what they are doing. Great pics.

With all the inlay you do, I am surprised you don't make use of a laser cutter/engraver.

Well that is one tool that I have always wished for. When I looked into them I needed a minimum 60 watt machine and at that time they were nearing $20K and I just couldn’t justify the expenditure. I recon they are a lot more money than that now so at this point in my career I’ll just have to make do with the tools that I have.

I think you could get a lot of use out of a 40-45W model which would cost a lot less -- but obviously you are getting by without one!

You need a minimum of 60W to cut through .060” Ebony which is one of the more difficult woods to cut with a laser. If I owned one I could foresee a lot of inlay use on Ebony peghead overlays so that is the logic I used to choose the proper sized machine.

Oh yeah, ebony is super tough, true! That makes sense.

We have a hard enough time figuring out simple camera equipment.

I was asked about the final pictures and where they were done. To keep the over head cost down of McKnight guitars for our customers our wood shop becomes a McKnight photo shop temporarily when guitars are ready to be seen.

In case anyone reads this far into this McKnight thread I would like to hear from you in a PM if you care to join in.

I am seeking donations for new and used clean guitar straps for a class we will be giving during the McJam called Don't get strapped with the wrong strap.
If you are able to contribute please contact me for shipping information or maybe you should make arrangements to join us that weekend in June.

The guitar straps can advertise your name or business. It can be so old and comfortable that you are willing to lose it and possible win another bigger and better or one that you found to be quite uncomfortable. We have had this class years ago and it was quite successful. It is time for an up do. Feel free to recycle one from the past McJam for this cause. I need to fill the door prize table.

At the end of the door prize hour a representative of Guitars for Vets will attend and be glad to take any extras. If you desire to give straps to Guitars for vets and not the McJam that is fine. I have your back. Please state that desire alone with your strap and it will go directly to the rep on that day. Any size, name or ad on a guitar strap is welcome. I hope to hear from you.

Thank you!

Snippet time is my favorite time to share when I can sneak insider pictures for you to see. You get to see pictures here of stuff around the shop that might not matter to some, but others are curious to view. Go ahead. Ask me questions. If Tim sees them he can answer. If I am close by, I can share answers. Though I don't know all the answers, because I'm sure Houdini didn't tell his wife all the good ideas he has, it is Ok for me to do the ole show and tell when I discover there is a new fun item in the McKnight shop. For now, just take a look at these pictures. One of our Ohio friends is making a guitar for a grandson. He spent a few hours this past week here asking Tim questions. Show and tell is a great learning experience. As many of us learned from the childhood Dick and Jane series and the Think and Do books, older experienced luthiers want to be sure this education doesn't get lost. Knowledge is power for those who play and those who build. In my case, knowledge is fun to share since I do not build or play. I'm a great watcher and a happy listener. I'm probably not so good of putting pictures in order.

Cutting string slots in the nut.

Fret wires are pressured into place.

Buffing wheel prep time isn't just time consuming and a little hard on the back. You must remember to use the proper grit and to not be in a hurry to, as Larry the Cable guys would say, "Get 'er done!"

The buffing process takes patience. What can go wrong with a nice buffing wheel? Luthiers smile and get that butterfly in the belly feeling. Hmm... I can tell you the wheel is the master mind if the luthier isn't totally focused. It's a good guess that the wheel has gained an attitude and grabbed a guitar in the past for each luthier who stands in front of that wheel. This is my secret observation for you. Guitars DO NOT make good frisbees! On the other hand, buffing wheels occasionally go deeper than the luthier desires. One teeny weenie scuff can ruin a day. Going to deep in that fractionated spot means going back to the drawing board to start over to be sure the guitar later has a mirror like finish from peg head to end wedge. Note the way Tim stands when buffing the neck compared to the stance of the box being buffed. His grip is tighter and his body is braced to stay more steady. New builders like our local Ohio friend ... take heed.

Sanding ... This may seem like a simple procedure but it is loud. It's an all day job sometimes. Again, different grits aren't just the only thing that's different.

Yes, you see that correctly. Tim is wet sanding with water and Murphy's oil soap. The guitar shop smells like a babies bath house. It's a pleasant fragrance.

Of course there are hours and hours ... and hours ... of hand sanding involved. For those of you who do not build but think prices of custom guitars should be less because it's a quick easy process, I assure you this is not. For us it's not an order today pick up next week project. Seeing the items involved and watching the process might help you to never underestimate the hours involved in the builds you see in the AGF. This forum is filled with great builders. Each will build differently. Each guitar takes dedication, time and a love for the project from the one who builds (and to the Ohio grandpa who builds for that grandson) ... its a life long treasured item neither of you will forget. It's wise to ask questions and then proceed.

The McKnight Silver Bullet guitar is getting a bit more special treatment. This guitar is absolutely stunning. It's being spoken of often and can be seen at the Artisan Guitar Show 2023. We have already set up a full page ad showing off a few details of this instrument. This luckenbooth lute hole cover is one thing we did not show in the ad. It's not an after thought. It's more for the eyes who attend the show in person. It is just one more thing I love about this guitar.

Tell me what you think of this. I'm personally flabbergasted by the beauty of this one. It's just breathtaking. I don't walk past it and ignore it. It demands the attention and won't take no for an answer. I've had a few personal favorite guitars over the years. The McKnight Spar guitar, the McKnight Memphis guitars, the McKnight Choker and several others. I'm a little more attached to the guitars that we built for this show. The McKnight Kokopelli is too cute. I can't look at him and not smile. He is just cute. The McKnight Spence guitar pulls you over to examine it as it is full of suspense and drama. I plan to showcase it to attract the eye once it is on the table. The McKnight Southwest will be displayed with a touch of flare to appeal to pull you into the McKnight booth.

Presenting a McKnight Luckenbooth lute hole cover. This is removable. It's just adding a "come closer to look at me" gorgeous old west addition. Come prepared to spend time with this guitar. In fact, put on your cowboy boots and get your covered wagon dressed up. YOU will want to put your own personal touch to this if you are the one who purchases this guitar which is titled as the

McKnight Silver Bullet - History in Playable Art. (2023)

Tone rite ... Tim was used in this ad a few years ago and continue to appreciate this product.

Blue DR strings to appeal to our Blue grass player's eyes

Using DR red strings make the Spence Blood wood tree strike the eye a bit more than the average strings.

It's good to be loved.

Tim, thanks for the pictures. Very nice work.

I remember when one of your Diamond double tops went out on a forum "roadtrip"
(wow already some fifteen years ago). A lovely great sounding guitar that one was.
