And the beat goes on
inside one and outside two became one double side. Occasionally the job goes a bit more smooth for the McKnight luthier when there is an extra hand or two on site. But, 'tis also true that sometimes true that two extra hands might be to many hands!

SDG guitar
This guitar was originally conceived of by my wife after we met Tim and Mary at the Artisan Guitar show.
Then as everyone knows, Covid came and everything was put onto hold. At the end of that year, my best friend passed from a cerebral aneurysm, and the last thing that I was considering was her guitar plans. The Children (each adults of course) had known of her planned instrument, and so like a Phoenix they resurrected the plan and we added extra stunning features which we are certain that she would enjoy greatly. So enjoy these postings, and please comment and applaud both of The McKnights for all of their efforts in this very special guitar. If you are coming to the show in 2023 stop by and meet them, and see as well as play this guitar. Have a Blessed day ! |

Beautiful woods and story for this guitar.
I look forward to seeing it come to completion and hearing it sing. I'm sure it will make glorious music for generations to come.

Here I am, admiring the rosette as this comes together (beautiful!), then read the back story...a wonderful way to remember her.

It's fun to see a few friendly faces and nice comments. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of this special journey filled with memories.
Side one and side two of double sides are ready to get to work. Pre-fitting is always wise. Experience is a great teacher. The fit appears to be fine so the neck and tail blocks are ready to be glued in place. Kerfed lining is glued to the inside of the frame. Time to tease Tim about playing with sidewalk chalk. During this process it is his best friend.

Tim often has a few new things up his sleeve!
The ReEcho disk is inside this guitar

A most interesting building sequence. I would love to hear your thoughts on the disk and whether you plan to put any braces across the back, etc. etc.
thanks John

Well, there are a lot of things going on inside this box as you’ve noticed. This is a 12 string so there are 4 buttress braces in use as opposed to my normal 2. Since there is 2x the string pull on the top I’m trying to take some load off of it and displace it to the waist. The area north of the sound hole is in compression while the top behind the bridge is in tension, hence 4 CF tubes to counter those loads. The reason you don’t see any back braces is because they are hidden between the inner and outer backs. It’s our “hollow back” design. There is an inner and outer back separated by an air gap. Braces are glued to each back but they are separate. The Re-echo disc is glued to only the inner back. I’ve got about 10 Re-echo’s built so far and I am really liking them. It’s a great way to bring sustain to an otherwise dead back and on backs that already have good sustain it just amps it up even more. Plus if the player uses a strap the Re-echo still vibrates and couples with the top, increasing volume output. I stuff sponges in my sound hole and cover them with a butter bowl lid to keep finish spray out of the interior of the soundbox. If you’ve ever tapped on a soundbox that has sponges in it you will hear a thud about as interesting as wet cardboard. When you tap the top and back that has a Re-echo disc in it the top still goes thud but the back rings like a gong. It’s pretty cool the effect that the Re-echo disc has. |

I think these pictures will pretty much explain themselves. I do hope if there are any questions you will ask. I'll let the chief discuss the details.

The peg head, heel cap and neck area gets the attention. The last two are different angles. Not sure I have shown this in a while.

This will be a fun guitar to try out!
Hey, next time at Tim gets bored, tell him to inlay this shape without making it round. That would keep him busy for a while. |
