Arrow NEW DEMO VIDEO ADDED - Oska Burman Guitars | OM - Alpine Spruce/Bog Oak

Happy New Year to all!

Whilst I've been a forum member for awhile now & also recently became a sponsor, this is in fact my first build thread to be posted on the forum. Having not built with this particular (back & sides) wood before, I will be very excited to hear its first notes. It is currently in the finishing stage, so I hope to have it strung up very soon.

It's a short scale 630mm (24.9") OM with an Alpine Spruce top & Bog Oak back & sides. Fittingly, it has been trimmed throughout with Oak detailing, a lot coming from an old church pew that I salvaged years ago.

If you're not familiar with (English) Bog Oak, in short, it's Oak that fell into an East Anglian bog thousands of years ago and has been preserved under anaerobic conditions until now. During this time, the Oak underwent a chemical reaction whereby the tannins in the wood reacted with the iron in the bog, making it denser & drastically altered its colour. It's an amazing wood in all aspects and is obviously extremely rare, given that you can't grow 5000 year old Bog Oak trees & that there will only be a limited number of them discovered & dredged up. I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten my hands on this wood & it is an absolute privilege, as a luthier, to be able to make a musical instrument out of such a fine specimen.

Thanks for having a look & there will be more to come when the guitar is ultimately finished.

Cheers,

Oska.

The Gold MOP actually came out with a series of rainbow colours - Nice!

Beautiful woods, Oska, and a very tasty rosette!

I look forward to seeing this one completed and with finish.

Then onto some neck & fingerboard work...

Getting the heel cap on snugly

Here you get a good idea of the Oak details - heel cap, back centre strip & bindings

Full neck, heel & volute carves are all done with the body attached

Mostly refined heel profile

Initial planing of the facets that will ultimately form the compound radius of the Ebony fingerboard

Front dot action

With the body largely complete, it's onto the bridge...

(The other one is a Rosewood/Sitka MD)

Just about ready for final sanding I'd say

Dialling in the main profile of the bridge

Working on the back contour of the bridge

Bridge complete at this stage

Onto final sanding, truss rod cover & grain filling...

Final sanding is done - now onto grain filling

Matching Oak truss rod cover gets an oiling

Grain filling gives you an taste of what it'll look like under finish

Oska, what absolutely beautiful work! I love the white oak bindings/trim to contrast the bog oak b/s. Simply stunning workmanship!

Some of the cleanest work ever. Not just in execution but design, innovations, and decision-making. You are a true craftsperson and inspiration!

Looks good! I'm hoping to drop in at the workshop next month, will get in touch nearer the time. But meanwhile I'll watch this build with interest.
