Decided that curly cherry would look great with the Honduran Rosewood since they both have elements of gold and red tones. The back strip composition is replicated in the center neck laminates with holly and BRW in the center.

Binding Chanel is cut. I modified this elevate binding cutter by adding a micrometer gauge that gives an accurate readout of the channel depth.

Looking really nice . I imagine Mike aka Woody is very pleased with how it’s looking.
Adding the micrometer seems like a great idea for cutting the binding channels.
The old saying of work smarter not harder would seem to apply.

Default Back bevels

These bevels on the back are some of the most trying for me. It’s an inside cut and the gradual dip and recover of the bevel path, especially on the sides is just a pain. Here-to-fore these have all been cut by hand with the resulting irregularities that had to be carefully removed with chisel and file. Very time consuming and really not much fun. So today i had success with the following technique, letting my dremmel cut the channel on the side.

What is showing here are two tapered pieces of wood taped to the back to guide the depth of cut.

This shows the dremmel resting on the wood stuck to the back guided with a modified purfling cutter.

Here is how i modified the purfling cutter. I had to lower, (or raise depending on your perspective) the foot that acts as a guide for the depth of cut because there was not enough depth of cut in its original configuration. (The bit exposure is limited by the brass guide)

On the back the limits of the bevel are cut with the dremmel and i just follow the drawn lines more or less freehand. It’s pretty easy to get that right.

It does take a little cleanup with files to make sure there is a smooth transition from the bevel to the regular purfling Chanel

And then the inside curves are cleaned up with a shop made sanding block and a riffler

Smile Bevels!

I, for one, am extremely grateful that you will do these BOSS bevels.

They make even my jumbo size JKs feel like a big Stratocaster. So comfortable

Go John

I like all those jigs/solutions. Looks like I’m overdue for a shop visit!
I’d love to see a live demonstration.

Well yeah! I believe you are overdue. Come on down and we can do shop and go to Cormark and Scroungers. Bring your pickup.

Default Top purfling

I made a Chanel for some wood purfling.
This is a preliminary layup for the purfling made of two kinds of burl, Honduran rosewood, and padouk burl, plus some fiddleback mahogany and a strip of BRW.

Final layup using similar woods with a holly strip replacing one of the mahogany pieces, and a much thinner rosewood strip.

This shows a little shop made miter box with an adjustable stop to govern the thickness so the pieces.

One of the pieces laying on the top and a few already resting in the groove.

Purfling complete

So many intricate lines, angles and connecting points! This is quite a work of art, John, and really impressive execution. Thanks for documenting it. Very, very nice. Dave
