Progress update: So begins the boring part of building these two guitars - applying lacquer. Spray…wait. Spray…wait. Spray…wait. Spray…wait. You get the idea. Slowly building up about a dozen or so coats over the course of the next 5 or 6 days. Then leave it for 3 weeks to cure before levelling and buffing. There won’t be much to see on these guitars for the next month.

Progress update: Seems like I’ve been waiting forever but the lacquer is now sufficiently dry. Time to get back to work levelling and finish sanding. First the necks, then the bodies.
IMG_1692.jpg Necks are sanded up through the grits to 1000. The head plate on the front will get buffed to a glossy shine but the rest will be left with a satin sheen. IMG_1693.jpg Time to start level / sanding the body. IMG_1694.jpg |

Progress update: frets have been installed, tuner holes prepped, bodies sanded and buffed and ready for assembly.
Frets get pressed in. IMG_1753.jpg Two fretted necks: one with gold frets, the other with cryo-wire. IMG_1754.jpg Tuner holes: 1/4” pilot holes are drilled first, then the holes are opened up with a piloted reamer. IMG_1755.jpg Drilling and reaming results in nice clean holes with no chipping or tear out. IMG_1756.jpg Everything is buffed and shiny and waiting for assembly. IMG_1757.jpg |

Hi Andy.

Progress update: assembly begins with sanding the correct radius into the bottom of the bridge, gluing it on, attaching the neck, and gluing down the fretboard extension.
The bottom of the bridge is sanded to exactly match the slight dome of the top. IMG_1779.jpg Bridge is glued on and clamped in place while the glue dries. IMG_1780.jpg Neck is attached and fretboard extension is glued down. IMG_1781.jpg |

Progress update: inching towards the finish line. Fret work done. Bone nuts and truss rod covers done.
Frets get leveled… IMG_1805.jpg …crowned… IMG_1806.jpg …and polished. IMG_1807.jpg Bone nut gets made. IMG_1808.jpg Truss rod cover held in place by small magnets and a tiny block of wood. IMG_1809.jpg Truss rod cover held on invisibly. IMG_1810.jpg |

Progress update: Tying up some of the many final details on these two guitars. They’ll both now settle in under string tension for a bit and then get a proper setup before being pronounced as done. Glamour shots and sound samples to come.
Tuners installed. IMG_1826.jpg Measuring location for saddle. IMG_1827.jpg Cutting the saddle slot. IMG_1828.jpg Reaming bridge pin holes. IMG_1829.jpg Cutting string ramps. IMG_1830.jpg Shaping the bone saddle. IMG_1831.jpg Walnut 00 strung up for the first time. IMG_1832.jpg Sapele dreadnought gets its first strings. IMG_1833.jpg |

For those who’ve been following this build thread, thanks. The guitars are now completed and I’ll post photos of each in their own new threads.
