Default Willis Reed

The Captain has passed. In my high school days I was out of my mind over basketball. I don't watch basketball like I used to. Those Knicks teams epitomized ball movement and team defense. I miss those days.

It's a different game. We don't have Willis and Wilt pounding on each other anymore. I miss it too, Bob.

For many of us New Yorkers, arguably the best Knicks lineup ever...

RIP Captain...

He also coached at Creighton U. back in my hometown in the early '80s.

Willis was listed as 6'10" but was probably closer to 6'8". Back then it was a big man's game and what he lacked in height he made up for in pure toughness and will. He only played 10 seasons with the last few slowed by injury. I saw some pix of him a couple of weeks ago and he looked frail. As a New Yorker the image frozen into my memory forever is Willis, ball in left hand, right shoulder buried into Wilt or Unseld or Kareem, getting ready to clear them out.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Willis. May you rest in peace. The Knicks teams from that era were great. They were all all-stars, Earl the Pearl, Clyde Frazier, Bradley, DeBushere, Phil Jackson, Dick Barnett, Cassie Russell.

It’s weird I was never a Knick fan - I was always a Willis Reed fan, a Walt “Clyde” Frazier fan (wore Puma Clyde’s for years - didn’t help!), an Earl the Pearl fan (although that started when he was a Baltimore Bullet), and a Bill Bradley fan. I never saw anyone do anything tougher than Willis playing with a torn thigh in game 7 of the 1970 finals and willing the Knicks to the title. I was 10 (just a few days shy of turning 11) when he did that, so I’m sure I didn’t FULLY appreciate what he did, but I never forgot it either…

RIP Willis,

-Ray

Back in the day, I attended a game in Los Angeles between the Knicks and Lakers.
Saw a lot of those guys.

I still remember watching that Game 7 on TV.
When Willis Reed game out I was thinking, "this don't look good".

Haha. It wasn't good, but not just because of Willis. Frazier went for 36-19-7 with a load of steals which weren't recorded then.

Walt Frazier had the game of his life that night. My favorite game of that series was game 5 when Willis got hurt and DeBusschere and Stallworth somehow kept Wilt in check. What a squad! Oy, I'm getting all verklempt!
