Awhile back I had a terrible accident and thought I may never be able to play guitar again, so at the time I bought a Yamaha MODX-7, which practically played itself. Great board, but no weighted keys. I recently sold it due to seldom playing it, perhaps in part since it reminds me of the accident.
I am a fair keyboard player -- I can pick out a melody by ear and play chords with a lead sheet. Anyway, the MODX-7 was a bit intimidating to try and go to the deeper functions, and I've been wanting an 88 weighted keybed board that has great sounds and is relatively user friendly, and has transpose and arpeggiator functions easily accessible. The MX88 checks the boxes. The only complaints I've read of it are issues with the keybed going bad after a year or so. Thoughts on the MX88? Or recommendations on something else that checks those boxes under $1500?

I've played keys... forever. I've had a lot of keyboards over the years -- electric pianos and then synths, mainly Yamahas. I do not recommend weighted keys! The touch sensitive keys on my current synth -- Yamaha Motif XS7 -- are simply awesome, especially since they allow you to play riffs hugely faster than is possible with weighted keys. Like in this little piece.
Yeah, the Motif XS is pretty pricey. Sorry I don't really have a recommendation. I probably only use 20% of the XS's capabilities. It's got so much stuff inside it, you could probably rule the world with the thing, lol.

Here's the Smorenburg demo of the Motif XS that sold me. There's a newer model now; maybe more than one -- I haven't been keeping up. But this demo is something else!

I have the MX61 as well as an MX49. I'm mostly a guitar player, but I use these synths in my band when a tune calls for it. They have way more capability than I'll ever use.

I've played some keys in some rock situations. I play zydeco, blues, forro, balkan, french musette stuff.. on piano accordion (also button accordions).
I'm totally trying to resist getting another synth - I easily lose myself in waveform.. And I would certainly neglect playing all the acoustic stuff I've got going on. ASM make a $500 state of the art 'Hydrasynth' which has polytouch/aftertouch keys. Most every day I think I'll get one...then look at the pile of stuff I'm working on and I'm able to stave it off... |

I pulled the trigger on the MX88. Stay tuned for a NKBD.
