iRig2 or other alternatives?

I'm looking for a cheap and clean enough way to record my acoustic guitar pickup.

I see there is iRig 2 which looks cool, 60$ for me, that's so far the front runner. It seems pretty good, but if it has a downside, it's that it requires 3.5mm jack, which is ok for me rn, tbh, but, it's not future proof. So, ideally, I could have something that can work with USB C and lighting connector. But if that's not possible, I'll just go with iRig 2, unless there was a good cheaper way.

I saw iRig on amazon, but they look like noisy knockoffs. I also think I would need a gain adjustment since my pickup I'm using doesn't have one. But, I mean the sound quality doesn't need to be spectacular, so, if it recorded loud enough, and I could get iRig for real cheap, I'd be down with that. This is just to be able to make some social media videos out on the balcony or whatever.

I have a HN5, which I see can be used to record to iPhone through lightning port, but unfortunately it requires using the USB port on the zoom H5N, which is how you provide power to the H5N, which means you need AA batteries to power the zoom, which is not great, but that's another decent option.

I could also just record audio straight in the zoom, and then import it to the computer and sync it up, but I'd like to avoid that sort of thing.


Anyway, if anyone else has some ideas, suggestions, insights into using any of these or what have you, I'm all ears.

I'm not positive about your exact use, but $25 gets you a Saramonic SmartRig that lets you input a guitar or XLR phantom power microphone to your Smartphone.

I bought one a while back to use a condenser mic patched directly into my Android phone to shoot videos with better sound quality. It works fine, and I posted about it in the topic "Easy Video Recording With Android Phone".

This is super cool. The xlr version is a good deal, but unfortunately I really need to plug into it 1/4", and the version that does that, costs more than iRig. But it does also look better, to be fair.

Look closer.

My Smartrig (like the one in the link) has a XLR combo connector that accepts a 1/4" guitar cable. It's plainly visible in the bottom product photo and also labeled as "XLR microphone input / 1/4" instrument input". They spell that out in the advertisement, "Allows you to attach an XLR microphone or 6.3mm guitar to your smartphone."

Oh right. Weird. I think I must have been looking at an older model or something? Idk, I could have sworn I saw that there was no possibility for 1/4 inch.

Is it possible with this to be able to record a duet on tiktok and hear what you're playing with, and also direct monitor what you're playing?

I’ve got an iRig Pro Duo. I really like it. Plugs into a Mac, iPad, iPhone etc. It has a phantom powered XLR input and also a regular XLR. You can also do 1/4 inch with both inputs.

For what I do, the 2nd input is super handy.

I’d take a look to see if it might meet your needs.

Only drawback is that it doesn’t power the iPad or iPhone when plugged in, so eventually your apple device can run out of power.

I suspect it also works with USBC.

It’s also a bit pricier, but it’s been quite reliable for me for years.

Thanks for the heads up, but that's still a bit pricey for me unfortunately, and I already caved and got the regular iRig lol. Which is good, however, it has a major drawback, which is that it doesn't have a live monitoring feature. Which is a downer. So, I need to hear my guitar faintly through my headphones when I'm recording duets on tiktok. Which is really a big reason why I wanted this. In some cases I could maybe amplify my guitar, or do some sort of workaround, but I was really hoping to have a nice and easy quick solution. I guess it relies on software monitoring, and to avoid feedback issues tiktok doesn't do that. It expects you to use the phone's microphone.


But another reason I have it is so I can input straight into my computer, and my computer out into the iRig, which is cool. That will work just fine. I can just monitor my computer at that point.

That is a sweet deal though. I hope someone else sees this and takes advantage of it.

Really hoping it will work well for making video's with my iphone and Rode NT1A. We shall see.

I’ve got the iRig Acoustic Stage which I think is very good for fingerpicking in particular, and if blended with the guitar UST/pickup is quite good for strummed

I have a SM58 mic. Will this work well with the iRig Duo?

Somehow I missed this. Yes, it should work. Any XLR will connect, including those that require phantom power.
