An extra layer of fiberglass and maybe two or three additional pounds of weight.

Actually, the additional weight may be a bit more than that, so don't quote me on that.

The original British-made Caltons were and are the same weight as the Canadian-made Standard models. The Deluxe version is something that Al of Calton Cases of Canada in Calgary came up with.

Quite honestly, unless you're a full-time musician constantly on the road and checking your guitar into luggage at the airport on a daily basis, the Deluxe model is more than most people will ever need. I fly out and play gigs in remote Alaskan communities several times a year and sometimes need to fly to the Lower 48, and feel no worry whatsoever when I check my guitars through in my British-made and Standard weight Canadian Caltons. They're incredibly well-protected in those cases.

An additional advantage that you get when you buy the Standard weight, aside from avoiding the Deluxe model upcharge, is that the same case can be used as an everyday case for around town. All of my guitars that are housed in Caltons stay in them all the time, whether I'm playing a gig in Nome or taking them to use in church.

I recognize that most Americans who've decided to buy a Calton are going to purchase the Deluxe weight case regardless of my explaining why the Standard is more than adequate; I was a Calton case dealer for about three years and in that time only one person ever decided to go with the Standard after listening to my advice. Every other single case I sold, other than one I bought for myself, was a Deluxe.

Which is why Caltons have got such an overblown reputation for being excessively heavy, I suspect: all that most people in North America have ever hefted are the excessively heavy ones. (Want it to be even heavier still? Get a Deluxe and then cover it with an insulated case cover!! Your chiropractor needs the work!)

Hope that makes sense.

Well said Wade. The last Calton Case that I got was a standard and it was no heaver than the TKL case that I normally use.

I have a deluxe canadian made Tan/wine interior for my Bourgeois.

I think Wade has a great point. British made standard cases which can be ordered in colors of choice should be more then adequate.

To me Caltons are good in my weather conditions.

Best,

Keyshore

Hey Atreus,

How about this - I right clicked on the image and selected "copy image location", then pasted that in the post using our "insert image" button. Nice Calton - and the guitar ain't bad either !

Bevelsnob, I like that speckly finish on your Ryan Calton cases. What color/finish is that? I think I'll go with that type of finish.
