It’s actually shocking to read the bad experiences as it’s so polar from my experience that it doesn’t seem like the same shop. Not sure why others aren’t getting the treatment I’ve received for many years, but I’ve continued to go back because they’ve shown to be a wonderful shop to work with and I’ve bought hundreds of guitars all over the country and have had experiences, good and bad, at lots of y’all’s favorite places but never anything but good ones at Eddie’s.
“Hundreds of guitars” ??? I thought I was bad :-)

I obviously haven't been to nearly all of them, but Fuller's has to be one of the best guitar shops in the United States. I make the drive from Austin to Houston every now and then just to pop in. I've bought one guitar from them, and it was one of the best purchasing experiences I've ever had.

Guitar shops are generally dreadful. They've somehow figured out how to make them enjoyable and relaxed while still having an absolutely world-class selection.

Bought two very high end guitars from Eddies and have zero complaints.

Well I live a couple hours from them and I have never heard anything good about them. But I am not bashing them either because I don't have any first hand knowledge.

But I am not going anywhere to try a guitar out that I have to have an appointment.

I did go to a shop in Jefferson City where the owner hoovered over me and it made me feel very uncomfortable.

Return policy:

48-Hour Approval Period
Most stringed instruments will have a *48-hour Approval Period that begins after you receive your shipment. This way you will be able to experience the instrument in the comforts of your own home to ensure that it is a good fit.

We will only allow an instrument to be returned to our store with a return authorization number, this is not an open-ended policy and will be handled on a per-case basis. We will refuse any unauthorized returns or unknown shipments to our store.
There will be a 10% restocking fee on all returns that are paid with PayPal or credit cards. This fee is not a profit to the store but covers any fees that we may incur to process your order. In the event that an item is returned, the customer is also responsible for all shipping charges. If you are to pay with a check, bank wire, or money order you will be held responsible for the shipment cost and there will be a 5% restocking fee. If the item is purchased in-house, a 48-Hour Approval period is not applicable. Items purchased through our Reverb store are only eligible to exchange for another item of equal value or more. All items that are returned must be shipped to us the same way it was shipped out to you. You must use the same packing materials, exact same shipping service, and purchase approximate insurance. We will not be held responsible for items that are damaged in return shipping.

Vendors have to strike a balance between giving customers access to their products and supporting an informed purchase or reasonable return and protecting themselves against product damage and abuse of their return policies. It sounds like Eddie’s has erred on the side of protecting their own interests. I don’t blame them, but I also don’t buy expensive guitars online, sight unseen, without allowing for a review or no questions asked return for refund if needed. Too many vendors without all the pitfalls and fine print o buy from a vendor like this one.

This is just a fascinating thread and I'm glad to be reminded of it.

Has there ever been such an extreme Jekyll/Hyde division, in terms of purchaser experience and commentary, in AGF history?

The one thing that seems clear is that they really, really don't want to sell except in person, as in would pretty much rather not make a sale otherwise.

Haha. You should search "Tonerite" lol. Or artificial relic guitars. Or "Does hide glue affect tone." Seems we are a passionate bunch!

Default I’ve only had great experiences with Eddies

I purchased a Taylor 814ce deluxe from Eddie’s a couple of years ago, and traded in my Martin 000-18 on the purchase. The experience was professional and I had a lot of communication from their team during the shipping process.

I also had conversations with Eddie’s when I was looking for a Waterloo that they didn’t have in stock. Eddie’s team helped me connect with Collings to find the instrument. Eddie’s was very helpful even though they didn’t participate in the sale.

I live in Cincinnati and they are in St. Louis, and I’m ok with the online buying process for mass produced instruments.

Bought my Tom Anderson from them. Zero issues. They do stock a lot of nice instruments. If I were local, frankly I'd prefer the appointment thing. When I was younger I spent (wasted?) a lot of time hanging around waiting to try something out. Better to set aside a chunk of time and be efficient - assuming they are doing it right on their end. Ymmv.

This is The Music Zoo’s pot-Covid model, as well. Just before Covid they built a beautiful new showroom. Now, you set an appointment to see what you’re interested in. I tested a few dreads, all tuned and waiting. No pressure, the guy offered to play them for me, as well, so I could hear what they sound like. Alto Music in Middletown, NY also works this way. It’s efficient, but also leaves no opportunity to randomly try something you hadn’t thought of.

Hey i know you can't please everyone but i thought i'd be extra cautious. So far their email reponses (Matt and Nathan) to my questions have been prompt and their international shipping rates are very good. I am interested to get a Ltd Edition so not a lot of choice around if not i would have contacted Ted from LA Guitar or Jon/Sharon from MFG.

Any thoughts?

I bought one in store and I had a very good experience.

Default Eddies Guitars, be Very Careful... One Star Review

I spent in the neighborhood of 20K over the years with them, and no problems, but recently purchased a 7K Fiarbanks that had a neck like a Louisville Slugger. Three professionals ( a group that had any number of antique Gibsons) including myself, said they had never seen a neck this bad... I called Eddies immediately and said I was returning it, they said to keep it a while and suggested I call Dale Fairbanks and see if he would make it right. So, I called Dale Fairbanks and he said he would love to take care of it, no problem. He said he did not carve the neck and would make it right. Six weeks later, he sent me an invoice for 650. He acted all along, like he would like to take care of it, but neglected to mention that he would charge me.
I then called Eddies to alert them that I was sending it back and then told Dale to ship it directly to Eddies. They said no problem, and all seemed fine... UNTIL, they charged me a 10% Restocking fee... new management and new policy I guess, but they never alerted me to that little change... it was all very quietly avoided in many many conversations. If they told you upfront they would charge a 10% fee who in their right mind would buy a 7K guitar? Yet all over the net in pushes buy a guitar and try it out, we want you to get the guitar you like. right... So, do not trust the New Eddies Guitars.

I have no dog in this fight as I've never purchased from Eddie's, but it does say right on their site that they have a 10% restocking fee...
