For me, it was a Les Paul Standard Cherry Burst. Probably my least favorite look on a Les Paul.
Back when GC had employee's that actually knew the business, as well as the customers. I walked in this particular day. And the manager, saw me walk through the door. Pulled this (used) guitar off the wall and handed it to me. Pointed me towards the AC-30, on the rack, the tone sold me not only the guitar but the amp too. cherryfront.jpg Cherryback.jpg Cherrybed.jpg This thing ended up on more tracks than any other Les Paul I owned. |

As a 12string player for most of my life, I always aspired to a Rickenbacker 360/12.
Having finally aquired a beautifull example in redburst, after a few months use I hated it. No doubting, the build & quality were first class, but the thin sound, narrow neck, (that I assumed I'd get used to but never did) and the absolute pain of re-stringing........it had to go! I am not a collector and all my instruments have "earned their keep" and although this "had to have guitar" was an error of judgement, I am happy that I did get to try the Rick experience!

However, I do agree with you on re-stringing.. And while re-stringing is not very often on this one, I pay my tech 50 bucks to re-string mine - and it's worth every penny! ![]() ![]() |

Yep. Decades later I still have it.
I was over in LA for some business reason and stopped by McCabe's, a store I'd heard about for years. This guitar was hanging in the "showroom" sort of hidden behind an open door. I had never bought a new guitar, and have never done so since. Took it off the wall, played it, and had to have it. It was way above my affordability range but I asked John Zehnder about it at the register. Built by a now-world-famous but then-unknown cello maker, it had been on the wall a while, and so was on sale at 33% off. ![]() ![]() |

Yeah, just yesterday, in fact. Went to Guitar Center with wife (who was getting some drum brushes), and I made the mistake of playing a Martin 000-15M StreetMaster. I instantly fell in love with it, and it's now at my house happily sitting next to my 00-18!

The one guitar I have wanted for years ever since I heard Johnny Cash play on Dylan's album Nashville Skyline back about 1970 was the Martin D-45. I did finally buy one in recent years (2018, when Martin went to forward-shifted, scalloped bracing on the D-45) and got a very good discount on it so that it wasn't ridiculously expensive. I'm glad I have it. This is a pretty good example of what it sounds like -- lots of warmth in the sound. - Glenn

In '91 I walked into Elderly's just to look around - I used to go every couple months before the internet days just to see what used instruments popped up.
There was a little guitar hanging on the wall with a florentine cutaway that said Taylor on the headstock. I'd heard of Taylor but not played one previously. I pulled it down and started playing it and it felt like home - mostly due to the 1 7/8 nut width. It was my one and only until I found this place in 2002 and started learning more about other brands and builders. Probably did 500 shows with it!

I had been a regular visitor to the Old Town Pickin Parlor in Colorado when in 2006 Kit handed me a newly arrived Goodall 000. Played it, couldn't believe it sounded so uniquely marvelous, so I asked him to play it while I listened. Had to have it, right then and there. Have bought and sold many since then but it has remained. Still the only Goodall I've played.
