Default Over-the-shoulder mic

From time to time someone posts asking about a particular topic. Invariably someone else steps up with a link to a thread that covers that topic. I’ve been trying to find a thread from earlier this year, so I thought I’d see if anyone remembers it and can point me to it.

Some time as late as April, and possibly before that, an infrequent poster put up a video of his recording with spaced pair plus one over-the-shoulder mic. I’ve tried in vain to find it. I’ve looked in Record, Show and Tell, and Play and Write, all back to January 2023.

Anyone remember this?

EDIT: and just like that, I found it. Never mind.

This may be what you're looking for.

Or it could be this one

Maybe this one?

Those are all good. I was thinking about the newest one.

Mandobart, you’re one of those johnnie-on-spot types I had in mind. I had tried other key words, but not over the shoulder. Thanks for jumping on this!

Default Hey, that's me!

Hi b1j, happy to see that thread still getting some mileage. If there's anything specific you wanted to ask or share, I always value AGF'er input.

All the best,

Diogo

Hi Diogo,

I’ve recently moved to an interface with four mic preamps, largely after listening to your over-the-shoulder setup. Now I’m working on making several absorption panels. Once they’re done, I’ll be able to free myself of close-micing and try out some new mic arrangements.

One thing I noticed is that you used panels behind you and on just one side, but not the other. That makes sense to me: I suppose it allows in some room “air” but cuts down on flutter echo.

That’s neat you’re expanding your approach, b1j - I’m very much a (overquipped) beginning recordist, but have found I do like the result. The fourth wall is where my computer and preamps are, which is another reason why there’s no freestanding panel there. That said, I do have panels on the wall, as you can see from the pic.

I’m always eager to follow the example of those who get good results. I can’t wait to hear how the panels help my sound. I’m particularly curious about working with moments of long sustain fading to silence.
