For builders....I've noticed 7 string scales are the same 25.5 inches. Would it be possible w/o major alterations to convert a cheap 12 string into a seven ? Maybe the tuners can be used as is, and the only mod would be to the bridge pin holes and the saddle ? Fill in and redrill the bridge pin holes and file a saddle ...instant 7 string acoustic. Am I crazy ? then how about making an 8 string but with a high A instead of the lowest fsharp. Would the tension be less ? O wait...I bet this has already been done a 100times. Just thinking outloud.thanks

While your idea could surely be done, 12 strings are far too over built to make much of a 7 string.
I didn't see you mention it, but if I made a 7 string I would absolutely want to use MultiScale rather than a single scale. |

I see 7 string that are straight scale. I believe it's gonna be kinda of hard to find a cheap 12 that got fanned frets. In fact....those don't exist. I guess if you're building from scratch ? And being overbuilt is kinda of the point...for that other heaviest string? A cheap 12 can be had for 100bucks.

I do not want to speak for Mr. Sexauer as he's one of the best best luthiers alive in my opinion. But the point i believe he was making is that a 12 string converted to a 7 will not be a good sounding instrument. If your priorities have nothing to do with responsiveness and tone quality than I think you have a wonderful idea.

It could certainly work to have an instrument to practice and see if you like playing a 7 string. Also if you plan on playing with a pickup/amp you can adjust tone and volume.
You just gave me and idea. I have a salvaged 12 string bolt on neck from a collapsed Epiphone acoustic. Could make a 7 string solid electric with it or add a heel and build a conventional acoustic body. |

Two afternoons vbs. one? Someone who didn't know exactly what they were doing could do twice the damage.
