One way to get a 'warm', 'responsive' sound with little headroom is to make the top a bit thin, and/or brace it lightly. Since Engelmann tends to be a bit less dense and stiff along the grain than Sitka or Red, if you make it the same thickness you'll tend, on the average, to get that sort of sound if you don't make it thickness. I'd expect that from factory instruments.
