Bounsall build: curly walnut 00 and sapele dreadnought
And so begins my next build cycle as I return from a summer of electric guitar construction to the more familiar acoustic world. I often like to build a pair of guitars in parallel. This round, the first will be a 00 using some very interesting curly black walnut for the body and an Engelmann spruce top. The second will be a slope shouldered dreadnought made from ‘raindrop’ figured sapele and a Sitka spruce top. Should make for a pair of great guitars. Stay tuned.

Bounsall build: curly walnut 00 and sapele dreadnought
Book matched top and back halves have been glued together, cut to shape 1/4” oversize all around, and thinned on the drum sander. Backs are taken to final thickness. Tops are left a little thicker, to be thinned further after inlaying the rosette rings.

Build
Hi Andy
Really nice wood combinations and beautiful materials. What specs are you going to use for these builds ? ( 12 fret 1 3/4 or 1 13/16ths ) daniel Last edited by gstring; 11-01-2022 at 09:36 AM. |

The 00 is a commissioned build. It’ll be 24 3/4” scale, 14 fret, 1 3/4” at the nut. The dreadnought is being built on spec. Plan is for 25 1/4” scale, 14 fret, 1 3/4” at the nut. That could change though if someone with different needs lays claim to it in the next couple of weeks. Last edited by Andy Bounsall; 01-23-2023 at 04:20 PM. |

Nice specs on the 00. Right up my alley.
Beautiful Sitka top on the Slope D and the Sapele has a nice grain. Why is it called " raindrop " Sapele ? d |

Because of the figure. There’s an area with some tight quilting that looks sort of like raindrops.
