What other 'student build' programs are there?
Jguns thread on his student build is fascinating.
This leads to my wondering what other student build programs there are out there, such as what Jguns went through for those who are not actually looking to become a luthier. This would be very different from what someone like Symogyi is doing, where he is seeking to mentor a new generation of luthiers that will forward the state of the art. Curious. |

Do you mean a program where a luthier teaches students how to build a guitar? I know of three luthiers who have such a program - one in Switzerland, Brunner guitars, and one in Malaysia, Jeffrey Yong, and another in Soith Africa, Casimi guitars, where you build under their supervision and you end up with a guitar that you made yourself. I am sure there are many luthiers doing so in USA but this way, you get a foreign holiday at the same time! (Another difference is all three of these luthiers build according to very different methods compared to the Martin or Gibson traditional ways, so their courses are likely to be particularly eye opening particularly if youhave built a kit guitar before)

Here's a pretty extensive list although I'm sure it's not totally comprehensive...

If you have any interest in classical guitars I’d highly recommend Stephen Hill’s courses he runs through the European Institute of Guitar Making. They’re one month intensive courses with 6 students and 2 teachers (Stephen and a co-teacher) where you make everything including the intricate mosaic rosette.
I attended one of the courses in 2016 and recently taught alongside Stephen for the course this past September and think it’s a really great experience if you can afford to spend a month in a sleepy sea side village in the south of Spain (it’s surprisingly affordable in Granada province but taking a month off work isn’t always in the cards for everyone). Most of the students are guitar enthusiasts who have no intention of building another but some are aspiring professional makers who have gone on to become well regarded in their own right. A really fantastic experience for both though; many if not most of the students have no prior woodworking experience and always leave with a really professional level guitar, an appreciation for free tapas, and a sun tan.

I have little woodworking experience and have a hard time imagining I would leave with all my fingers, much less a decent guitar. How do they manage to get novices to create something decent?

Sergi DeJong in Canada should be added to that list.

All of these guys have worked out the individual tasks required to make each component of a great sounding guitar and help the builders through the specific tasks with lesser/greater supervision depending on how practical the builder is. So for example explaining how a plane works and reading the grain of the wood you are planing. Most courses have enough spare time to cover the slower newbies. I did both a 3 week course and also 1 night a week for 2 different guitars - also as a newbie woodworker. |

I'll second that. I did Sergei's 5 week live-in course in 2013 and it was amazing experience.
Max 5 students at a time, french polish instruction included.
