I'm a big fan of Billy Strings...
Billy had a small write up a couple of years ago in AG magazine, and said that he used a BlueChip TP48 pick, and stated that it was just because that was what his guitar hero Bryan Sutton uses...

Last I saw, Sutton said he used a Wegen after saying he'd tried everything else. I've never tried a Wegen.

Great picks. I don't know if they actually inspired the boutique pick movement, but they were certainly among the first (and still among the best).

Here's the write-up, from a site over at Next-Gen Pickers: 6 Rising Stars are Carrying on the Bluegrass Tradition by Making It Their Own: "Billy Strings got his nickname as a bluegrass-obsessed kid in Michigan trying to keep up with his dad’s all-night picking parties at the campground. “You’d see little me there on the cooler,” says Strings, aka William Apostol, who got his first guitar at age four. “I had to get up every time somebody went to grab a beer. I was just trying to hang and pick with those guys.” "Before long Strings was more than keeping up—he was blowing past players of all ages with his clean, super-powered picking. After gigging extensively for several years with mandolinist Don Julin, Strings relocated in 2016 to Nashville, where one of his roommates is fellow IBMA Momentum Award-winning guitarist Molly Tuttle. Says Strings, with serious understatement, “It’s like a little guitar house.” "These days the main focus for Strings, 24, is his own band, with Billy Failing on banjo, Drew Matulich on mandolin, and Brad Tucker on bass. Though he counts Doc Watson as his earliest inspiration—along with his dad—Strings is now exploring extended jams and stylistic territory that defies easy description. “'I grew up with bluegrass and old-time music, but I really like Black Sabbath and Yes and King Crimson and Kendrick Lamar—everything, all across the board. I don’t want to pigeonhole myself. What I like about music is that it’s boundary-less.'” "PLAYING TIP "One secret to better tone is to relax, Strings says, especially when the tempo is blazing, don’t be frantic and try too hard to go fast. “Instead of making the guitar sing, let the guitar sing,” he says. “Sometimes I think I play too hard. I watch guys like Bryan Sutton, who is so relaxed, but he’s still getting volume and great tone. I think there’s a sweet spot. We’re still using our muscles and we still need to play loud—we’re playing guitars over banjos. But if you overdo it, you can actually lose tone and volume.” "WHAT HE PLAYS "Preston Thompson mahogany dreadnought, with an Adirondack spruce top. Roy Noble mahogany dreadnought. BlueChip TP48 pick (because that’s what Bryan Sutton uses, confesses Strings). Elixir Nanoweb phosphor bronze medium strings. Elliott capo. Amplification: K&K pickup through a Fire-Eye Red-Eye preamp and, at times, effects including a phaser, distortion, and an envelope filter." From a 2019 advertisement for the BlueChip TP48 pick (price listed is 35 dollars): "This is the same model as used by the likes of Bryan Sutton and Billy Strings, so there must be some serious mojo in this pick! Slightly thinner than the .050” coming in at .048” thick." Here's the critter, both sides: A Billy Strings public Facebook entry from November 26, 2018, notes that BS endorses "Preston Thompson Guitars / BlueChip Picks / D'Addario and Co. / Elliott Capos." Just a note: In a 2019 YouTube interview, Billy Strings said that he really likes D-Addario and Co. strings (no more Elixers, apparently); says he hasn't had a problem with breaking strings on stage since he started using them. His primary instrument in 2019 is a sunburst custom HD-28-style Preston Thompson Guitar, with a personalized D-18-type rosette (because he likes a smaller rosette) and white binding along the sides of the neck (because his dad played a guitar with white binding along the neck, he says); it's Adirondack spruce over Brazilian rosewood, of course.

Well, I play my dreads with Blue Chip TAD 50s so .002" thicker and a very slightly larger 346 triangular pick.
So now I know why I don't play as fast as Billy Strings ! Right?

** I also tried a CLP casein blue 1.25 and it lasted a week, but the tone is really nice with very nice low end presence! I also have an EML 1.5 casein with a killer speed bevel that is very well polished. The tone is good, but I prefer the 1.25 and if EML ever offers a 1.25, I'll buy another. *** Just recieved a couple of Hawk 1.2 medium casein picks, but they seem thicker like a 1.3 or 1.4 compared to my BC TAD50 which is 1.25. They have a squared off speed bevel in a beautiful abalone blue shell finish... they sound great! Even so, I still prefer the tone, smoothness and zero pick noise of the BC TAD50. Billy is a blast to watch and listen to and Molly is right there with him!! cheers
