Default Can you use a Martin 0-15 to jam or gig with others?

Hi all.

Im looking at a second hand Martin 0-15 Westside custom which is also short scale. I was wondering if it has enough power to play with other people? I was looking at a single 0 since it has less volume and Mahogany guitars are meant to be a bit less loud than spruce so for home playing this would be desirable for me to use on my own. But if I wanted to play with another acoustic player would I be able to use this guitar or would I just be overpowered? I’d be looking at situations of jamming with one friend or another acoustic guitarist who would play and sing as well.

Can't say about an 0, but I attended a festival and there was a Bluegrass jam. A woman had a 0015 and it cut through the mix fine. I was actually pretty shocked.

I once owned a '34 0-17 that was way louder than it had a right to be. It is the guitar upon which yours is modeled.

It was a surprisingly good flat-picker. Wish I had not sold it now...

Volume isn't the only factor determining if a guitar can be heard in a jam setting. My Martin 00-18 seems to sound louder than it should, but part of that is because the tone is very clear, resonant, and focused. It has a lot of headroom, but is never going to be as loud as a D-18. Still, in a jam setting, it will have that "cuts through the mix quality." Think of a choir, voices in an opera, even a duet, or vocal harmonies. I saw the Pavarotti documentary two weeks ago. He had an amazingly powerful, loud voice, but in performance scenes the sopranos held their own.

It also depends on the folks you’re playing with, like do they listen? My 00-15 will keep up with most anything but a loud banjo.

Volume is 90% playing skill and 10% guitar features. Some people have a light touch and you can't hear them with the biggest dreadnaught, others know how to make the guitar sing and they can dominate acoustic groups with tiniest of instruments.
