Boss Acoustic Singer Pro & Compressor Limiter?

Hi - I'm trying to get some decent/even sound quality at a low volume out of my Boss ACS Pro 120w. I'd like to to take the edges off the peaks, especially with the vocals (SM58), so I don't irritate folks while their eating and chatting. (smaller pubs)

Thinking maybe I'm going for the sound of: "Music playing in another room".

I don't have the greatest mic technique especially when I am playing & singing. I wondered if a 2 channel compressor and/or limiter inline before the amp would help even things out... without sacrificing too much on the dynamics... Tell me if I'm nuts..

Back off the mic about 6” and most of the problem will correct itself.

GM - That is indeed a great place to start - Thank you for confirming the need for proper mic technique. Only other public singing I've done was screaming over a Marshall Stack. I need to sit back and relax and know I'll be heard.
