You can get pairs of Beyer MC930s for under $800. They are very highly regarded.

I will be making acoustic panels and bass traps. Will be mixing with decent open back headphones(SeinheiserHD6XX), will be using an RME Babyface pro or 1st gen. Have a powerful and quiet pc for recording. Thanks for all the replies

Thanks for clarifying. I, for one, would take even a single KSM137 over a 184. They're very different in character. So you might as well get a pair.

For solo acoustic, you will want stereo. In the example you mentioned I would go with the KSM137 pair every time for that reason. I do have a pair of KM184s and use them a lot. And then sometimes I will use one of them with another mic or just use other options all together. But these little adjustments are just small tonal and coloring changes.

With two KSM137s or whatever you select, You will be able to record in stereo.
You can always add a KM184 or another flavor later. One KM184 and one KM137 will sound fine.... You don't need pairs of the same thing.

Note that some folks don't even like KM184s or (insert ANY mic here) very much. What is "great" is subjective.

FWIW -- I bought my KM184s used.... at about $450 each give or take $40. I actually bought most of my mics used, and that can help stretch the budget a bit.

Good choice. The KSM137 is an excellent mic and (like all Shure mics) a great value as well.
