The Kinsale Comets
Here's one that went wrong, well, listening to this afternoon it wasn't quite as bad as I thought so here it is. This was supposed to have a banjo accompaniment but I couldn't work it out. I then tried some bottleneck and that didn't work either. Then I asked a fiddle player to twiddle over stand he failed to turn up!
This was the result of a challenge to write something in the idiosyncratic style of one of our favourite songwriters. Can you work out who? The Kinsale Comets He was far too contemplative To ever have settled down For him the solitary life On his farm near Bandon town At the local farmer’s market Some of the new girls thought Dan fine But the voices of experience cautioned Ah Dan, he’s not the marrying kind Without a doubt he’s a loaner And he prefers the company still of his prized collection of porkers On his farm upon the hill In his own way now he’s a charmer With his kind and his gentle ways But he’ll be living a bachelors life Right on till the end of his days Intrumental break Now every Thursday evening Dan took the coast road to Kinsale With his drapes, creepers and drainpipes Authentic in every detail And he makes his way through the side streets To the tiny ballroom hall To sit with the boys in the band At the weekly rock n roll ball **Chorus** Give it up for the West Cork Comets Our rockabilly band The dancehall is filling up quickly And the band’s set up on the stand And the dancers and the jivers Are the best you’ll ever **** see In the band Dan’s playing the piano In the style of Jerry Lee It was on one Friday evening He got chatting at the bar To a fine young lady from Poland Who worked in the Hotel and Spa Lena now was a farm girl And she missed the life on the land And from that moment all that mattered Was that Dan should win her hand Chorus Soon took Lena To share his life on the farm And for the Dan the lonely years ended As they walked out arm in arm Through the local farmer’s market As the ladies stopped and Stared To see Dan and Lena and the happiness they shared Chorus And every summer evening On the farm near Bandon Town You can hear Dan’s banjo playing On the wind for miles around While Lena she sings to the farmyard To those fine porcine colleens Lucille, Molly and Sally And the queen their Maybelene Chorus

Andy, I don’t have a guess about the songwriter whose style you based this on, but I will say that I really enjoyed it! Fun song, really good playing, and I like it without banjo or fiddle. Nice!
