Default Mic'ing the Avalon

I found that I can't have the mic on the lower bout side of the guitar at the same level or near the level of the sound hole while pointed at the lower bout.

It's best when the mic is up about 6 inches, to the right of the lower bout and pointed slightly away as well. If I don't do this I have to use a high pass or eq the bass down.

Or move the mike further out from the guitar.

What’s the distance from your mic to the soundboard, and are you using a directional mic not designed for close micing? (i.e. cardioid without compensation for proximity effect)

Interesting mic placement (cardioid)? Have you tried the mic 12"-24" straight out from the neck joint? You can adjust the eq by moving the mic closer/farther away and slightly angling toward/away from the sound hole.

For rhythm flatpicking, nothing beats a light pick with the mic pointed at the 12th fret. I always keep a mic on instruments and vocals, spreading your fingers wide, tip of pointer finger to tip of thumb-distance from the mic, using the spread fingers as your portable ruler.

I use 2 mics, an MXL 990 at the headstock area and a Rodes NT5 off of the lower bout.

One of the benefits of the kind of spaced pair mic setup you're using is that you aren't locked into any relative position - different guitars have different sweet spots, so you can (and often have to) move the mics around to find where things sound the best. You can try listening in headphones to see what sounds good, tho I never find that to be sufficient - a starting point maybe, but then you have to listen over speakers, and do repeated trials till you find the right spot.

The Avalon's a big guitar, right? Likely to be more boomy, and I often find it harder to record large guitars than something more balanced, like an OM-sized guitar. You probably will need to mic it from further away, even tho that may pick up more room sound.
