Default A N00b learning to record...

My Dad gave me a mixing board recently, a small Behringer, and I've been playing with Audacity a bit. Made a little recording with my wife yesterday. Sorry about my singing. Playing is a little rusty too; just got my right hand out of a cast a week ago.

Thanks! I've only been playing for a year and a half, so I'm always reluctant to share, but it was fun to record.

That was really cool ! I really liked that song. Well done. Great backing vocals from your wife too.

I listened with headphones, and the left/right panning of voices and guitar were quite extreme. Not bad, but it took me a while to get used to it.

Great work.

Thanks. And thanks for the advice; I'll pan less next time.

No, panning is fine to do, but I think what happened was, in the sections with no vocals, you must have muted the mics or pulled the mix down to zero, which lead to a 'dead space' on the right with no reverb or anything.

This lost the sense of the 'room' to me. If you had kept some reverb and spillover to the right, it would have kept the imagery that you were standing on a stage with the guitars on the left and the signers on the right.

It's all about creating an audio 'space' for the listener to appreciate the music in. Guitar and vocals were great, it's just a mixing tweak that is needed.

still learning to record, play guitar, sing, and now harmonica at the same time. I'm a glutton for punishment. It all needs some work.

very nice! I agree with CyberFerret though, you need to visualize the sound space as much as listen. Fantastic job though.
