Silk and Steel on my Avalon?
16.25ish lower bout. I've been using 13-56, but it is starting to sound a bit choked with that gauge lately, maybe because I'm playing up the neck more? I'm thinking about a set of 12-54 Silk and Steel. (If I can find a set - update GHS Silk and Bronze 12-54)
I just put a set of 11.5- 47 on my Seagull and I really like the sound. Both guitars are in Orkney (CGDGCD) btw. What the hey, I'm going to order a couple of sets.

No one has tried silk and steel on a dread+ size guitar?

I put a set of D'Addario 11-47 on a Mitchell Dreadnought that I bought to play on the beach or out on the patio. The strings took the harshness out of the sound and some stress away from my fingers. I sacrificed some volume, but that does not concern me, because I don't perform with the guitar. I just use it to practice out doors.
Mitchell can't compare with Avalon, so my experience may not be all that helpful. Last edited by k_russell; 12-09-2019 at 06:40 PM. |

Not every guitar works or needs 13's.
None of mine do. GHS Silk & Bronze are great strings, let us know how you find them. John Pearse make a great set too.

I had ordered the GHS strings. I'm looking forward to trying them. The Elixirs I have on it now aren't doing anything for me.

The guitar sounds very good. The Silk & Bronze however are quite different to Silk & Steels - feel and sound much more like a PB string ... but warmer. 12's in a Silk & Bronze should sound great on that guitar but you might notice a slight drop in volume as they settle in compared to PB's.

It wouldn't work for me but only you can tell us - after you try it.

I haven't. But you're getting nice tone out of your guitars already, so what's the problem?
I await to hear the results of your experiment. |
