"wguitar", how's she sounding?

I've been strumming mine pretty hard to accelerate the opening up - although it never has felt tight.

Regarding strings I'm a John Pearse fan, but I'm currently experimenting with Ernie Ball strings - they seem to size their strings just a little smaller, so the string tension is a little less and play-ability is easier.

So far it likes the Ernie Ball Alum Bronze strings in med/light (12 16 24 32 44 54). Easy to play and freaking loud when digging in with a pick.
I have some of the exact strings to try later, except in Phos Bronze.

Regards

Guitargeak,

Love the guitar and play it a lot ! Have quickly adapted to the slightly larger neck radius ("flatter" feel) compared to my '89 Taylor 810. Like you, have been testing different strings looking for that special sound and feel (as perceived by my senses). Came with John Pearce 600L which sounded pretty good but challenging for me to play (tension). Elixir Nano PB 11's sound great and playability is better for me, but not there yet. DR Sunbeams 11-50 PB have nice sound and great feel, but a bit subdued and jangly on the high strings when I dug into it. Thought I ordered some DR Sunbeams 12's PB's but received DR Rare 12's PB instead. Just put them on -- loud and too soon to access tone. Good thing is that the playability is decent for me and they sound pretty good at this point.. I plan on playing the Rares for a few days and then throw on the Sunbeams 12's PB's when they arrive. My guess is that I'll settle on one of those (for now anyway). Let me know how the Ernie Ball PB's work out. In addition to strings, I'm also experiments with different picks (I'm mainly a strummer). Again, really enjoying my new Larrivee and fine tuning it to my personal taste is a lot of fun! CHEERS!

Sounds good.
I use the Larrivee for strumming and my Taylor 12 Fret for finger stuff. I too was not used to the tension of the JP lights. That dad-gum Taylor is a short scale and unbelievably easy to play. But she doesn’t have near the headroom that the Larry does.
The Ernie Balls that I’m using are med/light and seem to have less tension than the JP lights - go figure. Easier to play.

Ok, I tried the Ernie Ball PB’s in med/light......just mediocre. In a blind test I wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference between them and D’Addario or JP strings.
Then I went with some JP PB’s in custom light (12-55) that I had laying around. Same thing.....they were so so, and felt like the string tension was more than the Ernies.
I then tried some D’Addario NB in light gauge......they were actually ok after a few days. Good volume and good bass, but the overtones that I like out of this Spruce/RW combo were subdued. There was more of a fundamental tone from the guitar, and I can see why the Mahogany crowd seems to like these strings.
(But, I do have some custom lights that I still want to try.)

Right now I’m trying out some Ernie 80/20’s in med/light and I might have struck gold.
Even though the strings gauges are similar (or same) as the others, the Ernies just seem to have a lower string tension that makes fretting noticeably easier.

I also, want to try some DR Sunbeam 12’s, but barring any big surprises, I’ll be staying with the 80/20 Ernies on the Larry and the Ernie AB’s on the Taylor 12 Fret.
Regards.
