Default What would it take...

to make you really free of GAS (as in guitars)? I ask because as one who has bought and sold more guitars over the past ten years than I can or care to remember, I really think that I've achieved a perfect combination of guitars for me. I know what you're thinking, but this time it really seems and feels different. So what would it take for you to remain free of additional guitar purchases???

Death? Coma?

I'm GASing for a ES-335 right now and I don't even play electric anymore! I dunno what I'd do with it -- just look at it probably.

1. Harp guitar
2. Nylon classical
3. C tuned guitar
4. Mod D with cutaway
5. Might sell my Razo OM and order a Razo GA with cutaway

This is it. I promise.

I already have a nice Adi/EIR DN, Adi/hog DN, Englemann/Brazilian oversized OM, maple jumbo baritone, modern voiced OM, Taylor 12 fret, and Sitka/Brazilian mod d.

If you’re anything like me you’ll find it becomes the guitar you play most....!

Staying away from forums like this on would do it. I had the same one acoustic and one electric for 25 years in the days before I discovered internet guitar forums, and never gave more gear a thought. Today, I have one acoustic and two electrics, haven’t bought anything bigger than a capo in a year or so, and have absolutely no GAS for anything else WHILE IM PLAYING THEM. But when I’m NOT playing, but I’m reading forums, thinking about guitars, and being bombarded with options, I do get a bit of GAS sometimes. So far I haven’t let it get to actionable levels since I’ve found the gear I really like. But I can’t deny it’s there.

Someday, when I’m more flush with cash - might be another few years - I may add another nice acoustic. I love just having one and never thinking about what guitar to play and only thinking what music to play on the guitar. But I’ve been playing more and more acoustic and less and less electric and on some level think it would be nice to have another really nice acoustic. But ai know if I ever breakdown and buy one, either one of them will be a case queen while I always play the other, OR, I’ll spend too much time comparing them and thinking about which to play on a given day and my playing will suffer for it.

Getting off of the forums would do it, but I enjoy the forums, still learn a lot from them, and have learned to live with GAS as a negative side effect of otherwise good medicine...

Ray is right the forums are a big part of it, but having a freshman in college helps keep attacks away. I stay off the Miata forum though. No need to go down the suspension rabbit hole.

My gas seems to come out boredom and not being involved enough in personal growth. It's not just guitar related either. If I have a working musical project on the go and I'm out playing a couple times a week or so, I don't think much about guitars, amps, or whatever. But if things get slow, well there is no end to what I can dream about.

It used to be Guitar Player magazine that was the portal to my gear lust, but now the internet has taken it's place.

Oddly, watching folks chase their tails on this board has made me more conscious of the negative aspects of gas, to the extent that I haven't bought a guitar since 2012. However, I have added a lot of songs to my repertoire and improved my singing and playing considerably, all without any of remorse. Which is more than I can say for any guitar purchase I ever made.

As a song writing friend of mine, Brock Zeman wrote,

'it ain't the wine I can't resist,
it's temptation that I've got a problem with'...

Pretty much sums it up for me.

Alimony is going to slow me down for 4.5 years, not that I'm counting.

First thing to do is stay off of the forum! Then stay off of the websites that sell/talk about/demo guitars. Then stay away from all guitar shops. Then "maybe" you'll be GAS free?
