Default Fingernail problem

In-grown middle fretting finger.
I think this comes with age...
Recently the lateral side of the nail has started to curve down at a sharper angle
IMG_8678.jpg
And thus tends to in-grow some. I am living with it, but It does pinch some when fretting certain notes and chords.
I asked my MD and got
The regular advice to file it straight across.
Anyone else have this problem. Who would you see for it? Dermatologist ?
Maybe pediatrist as they deal with so many
In-grown nails.
Any advise appreciated.

A year or two ago, I had what I think was a similar problem on my striking-hand ring finger, on the other side from the thumb. After playing for many years, it was the first time I’d had a problem like that and, for a while, I wasn’t sure if the pain was coming from the first joint after the nail (some kind of inflammation like arthritis). I eventually concluded that it was either the nail growing into the surrounding flesh or the flesh getting in the way of the nail or perhaps guiding its growth. I tried filing, trimming and even taking a break from playing, but the problem kept coming back, so my dammit-this-has-gone-on-too-long solution was to cut back the nail and the skin on the affected side much further than I was comfortable with. We’re talking home surgery that left me unable to play for a week or two. I guess I can’t recommend something like that on a message board for obvious reasons, but it seems to have worked.

For ingrown toenails, my mother's home remedy has always served: soak it daily for 15-20 minutes in a warm epsom salt bath to help with the inflammation. If it's really bad and that doesn't fix it, after soaking wedge some clean cotton or gauze under the edge to push the nail up and get it to grow out of the flesh again.

I've noticed a real improvement in my nails in general from mixing a scoop of Collagen powder in my coffee every morning (2 months now). I'm not saying it improved a ingrown issue, but mine were weak and cracking, and now they are strong and can handle some abuse. I really feel like this would be good for you to take while you are waiting for the excessively curved nails clear your nubs.
