Default The Month of January (Doug Young)

I did my own arrangement of this glorious tune some years ago, but when I was clearing out the garage a few weeks ago (a sad back story to this) I discovered Doug’s version amongst a pile a sheet music. (The back story is that my garage had been leaking for some months and a considerable amount of sheet music was ruined- the arrangement was one of a few I salvaged!)

Whereas my arrangement is a bit mournful I find Doug’s full of joy and I adore it. I hope he doesn’t mind me putting it here. January can sometimes be a horrible month- here in the uk we are in the depths of a quite damp and cold winter. However, I feel more upbeat this January than I have in many a year- a wonderful permanent job certainly helps!

Anyway, changed the strings to a new set of D’Addario XS and I set to work recording it. Unfortunately a few quite good takes were ruined because I had set the gain too height, so had to do it all over again. Never mind, I think this was just about the best of the lot. Hope you enjoy it!

In case you are interested:

I use a Zoom F3 to record now. It uses 32 bit recording so there is no need to set input gain. In post I raise the recordings by 25 DB generally. I use the available bluetooth adapter to connect the F3 to an app that runs on my phone.

The F3 saves files to a memory card. I connect the F3 to my computer via usb cord and upload the files (cut and paste) to my computer for editing and "mastering."

The downside with the F3 are the placement of the controls, the size of the control buttons and its overall smallish size. I have a camera tripod that I connect it to so it doesn't go flying by accident when setting up and breaking down.

The bluetooth adapter and memory card are purchased separately.

Thank you TBman, that sounds interesting. I think there are also some audio interfaces that have automatic gain setting. I hope to be in the market for a new interface in a few months time, so will certainly keep in mind the zoom- you certainly get some lovely recordings from yours

Very well done! I enjoyed this!

I am quite familiar with Doug's version of this piece. It was lovely to hear your version! And how supportive of Doug to comment here on your cover of this arrangement!

Wonderful stuff!
