Default “Poor Soul” Original

We would like to share this new song that my 12-year-old son wrote. His grandfather who fought a long battle with cancer inspired him. The message was written to comfort and remind us that, through faith, not even death can separate us from the ones we love. Here it is:

He’s to be judged on a live performance of this song at the youth talent contest in the local fair. They will pick apart and score him on natural ability (vocal and instrument), as well as, quality of performance and showmanship.

Any suggestions are welcomed and greatly appreciated.

If they're judging him on ability, performance, and showmanship; he should be all right as-is. He's a very talented musician.

As far as song critique, my overall impression is that there's too much guitar. There's a good message there, but not a lot of payoff. I would suggest shortening the instrumental interlude between verses and adding a killer chorus to bring it all together right where he ends the song in the video.

Thanks Jeremy, We will sure look into trying it something like that. One of the problems with the contest is that he’s playing an “original” song. They don’t count off for it but no credit is applied for originality and he’s up against all those darn classics!

His other song entered in the competition is an instrumental classical piece. It won 1st place in the preliminaries. The judges recommended he stick with the instrumental and wait for the vocals to improve.

Thanks again, Jim

It's too bad he doesn't get any points for originality and creativity in a supposed talent contest. To me it's more difficult to create and share something of your own than it is to ape someone else's work.

Best of luck to your son.

Can't give any advice as I can't sing, but the guitar work is really great for a guy his age. Tons of talent - I'll be looking for him in years to come!
Listened to some of the other videos as well.
I could use some lessons from Adam........

Sweet!!! Thanks Bud.
“Moxy”, Awesome!

We didn’t post to get complements but thank you very much for them. This young man truly wants to improve and is working to win the talent contest at the fair. It pays 500 bucks!

An update is in order. The crowd loved the song but it was disqualified for going over 3 seconds on the time! The applause got him off track causing the overage. The judges loved it but the officials had to yank it. Stinks right!!

Good news. Adam entered a second song, an original instrumental. Great tune but we thought the other was better. The instrumental made the final round on Saturday.

At Sunday’s finals, the instrumental took home the grand prize! He has secured an opportunity to play at the senior finals next weekend and comes back next year for another appearance.

Picked up a nice trophy and 500 bucks!

Not a bad ending at all…
