"Urge for Going" by Joni Mitchell. First popularized by Tom Rush.

For flat out tear jerking, water running down your sadness watch Vince Gill and Patty Loveless perform at George Jones funeral at the Opry. The solo Vince plays is remarkable under the circumstances.

Don’t say you weren’t warned...

Ive always loved this song and solo.As mentioned earlier, it was said that the Eagles "stole" the chord progression from this song for "Hotel California", but Ian Anderson himself defused this by saying that its just a series of chords, a coincidence, and that "Hotel California" is a much better song. I prefer this though. I was always a fan of Martin Barre, his recent solo acoustic
instrumental album "Away with Words" is excellent.

For some reason Pat Metheny's "Farmer's Trust" gets me.

I'm not even a big fan of George, Vince, or Patty, although I respect their work (especially Vince's guitar work). But when I saw this video a few years ago it hit me like a ton of bricks. Holy smokes.

Get a hold of both of Pat Mwtheny's solo acoustic albums... "One Quiet Night", which is largely explorations with his (then) new baritone Manzer... and "What's It All About?", which is a collection of songs that Pat says have been very influential for him; most of these are from the 60's/early 70's...

Very thoughtful and provocative musings, lovely stuff... and much of it fits your "sad" bill...

I think anytime I take a solo somebody is thinking how sad it is.

He has said that many of the One Quiet Night tunes were improvised as he was recording. Wow....

The anthology version of 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' is pretty melancholy.
