Default What is your campfire guitar?

You know. The one that you are not afraid to ruin. Or at least not heartbroken if it is injured.
Last night friends invited us to sit around their fire pit for a while. I wanted to take a guitar, but could not risk my good ones.
1960 Harmony Broadway to the rescue! Terribly beat up before I got it for $5, but acceptably cobbled back together, and holding together thru numerous attacks by the grandkids, it was perfect.
I sat and played softly as background to our fireside chatting, with no fear of scratching it or the impending thunderstorm. It was perfect.
So do you have a campfire guitar?

I bought an Eastman Pacific Coast model at the beginning of the summer for a boat/campfire guitar and also to have a guitar that I can hang on the wall, leave in a chair or whatever and not worry about too much. I paid just a hair over $200 for it and it came with a fantastic setup from the shop (Reverb seller). I've been pretty impressed with it. Obviously it doesn't emit rich tones and complex harmonics, but it does have a really cool old school, bluesy tone probably not unlike an old Harmony or whatever. I would actually record with it if I wanted that type of tone. And it's surprisingly loud!

It's nice to have a guitar always out and within reach.

I’ve been through some Washburns, Epiphones, Recording Kings, and cheap Eastmans. None of them sounded that great compared to my more expensive guitars. Someone on this forum once said we will look back one day and realize all of our memories were made with some cheap, poor sounding guitar. That statement really resonated with me, so now my “take anywhere” guitars are my J-45 and D-55. My suggestion for tone junkies is to buy a nice guitar in “player’s condition” and take it everywhere.

A Yamaha FS 800; $200 bucks roughly and plays great for what it is.

Simon & Patrick MJ (mini Jumbo). It's more than just a campfire guitar though.

I used to have a vintage Weymann parlour guitar for such events, but it was too quiet for campfire singing and I finally sold it. I now use my Leach; which is a very fine guitar. The folding neck allows me to put it in a dry bag for canoeing. As for fear of damage, I am very careful - and it is insured.

I don’t hesitate to take any guitar I own to the campfire or front porch. To me, they’re tools for making music, so let them do what they were built for.

I love this question. My current go-to is an Alvarez AP66SHB. Sometimes a Pono 0-10, but usually the Alvarez.

I got a Guild m120e for This purpose. It’s a pretty nice all mahogany guitar, and it’s tiny, so it’s easy to take on trips. Paid under $400 for it, but it’s all solid wood. I originally wanted a laminate for better durability, but couldn’t pass this one up for the price.

Taylor GS Mini. Our neighbors do that once in a while in the evening and we all sing sixties and seventies songs. It is about our only social interaction with people this summer. I don't think there is a lot of risk to a guitar sitting in a lawn chair around a bon fire. No more than anywhere else I might play it. I do lay it in the hard case, close the lid and latch it when I'm taking a break and hitting the cooler for more drinks.

My GS Mini is my do everything guitar as it is my only acoustic, so it doesn't matter where I'm playing, that's the one.
